I see a Black Friday deal going on on a rifle kit that has perked my interest. 18"ss 1/7 twist 223 wylde. Would be using this to plink with and mostly for a lighter coyote rifle than what I am carrying. I do mostly shoot 55gr vmax hand loads. Would I be happy with this? I searched around on the interweb and see they are designed for heavier bullets but will the rifle still perform with lifter bullets? Thanks.

Honestly each barrel is different. As a general rule the 1:7 is for more heavier target bullets, like the 69-77gr match bullets. With that being said I've shot about any weight under the sun out of them. Your rifle may shoot them just fine while another may not. The idea is to match the ammo to the barrel. I know that's probably not really the answer you wanted but it seems to run true from all the different twist rates. However if your just wanting plinking accuracy I think you'd be just fine with it.

I've found that my NM AR will shoot decent 55gr bullets as well as 77gr--but that was on a 100yd reduced range.

I have shot my 1/7's from arms reach to 400 yards, almost all with 55 grain xm193 and 55 grain .223 fmj They work great.

I think you will find the XM193 bullet is much longer than a similar weight VMax. Length has as much, if not more, to do with the twist/bullet compatibility as weight does. I'd expect better results with heavier/longer bullets, however, as previously stated, the only way to really tell is to give them a try.

One of my AR's has a 16" WOA match barrel with a Wylde chamber and a 1:7 twist. It does not like 55gr projectiles. It LOVES 77gr. Like the earlier posts stated, it's all about what your particular barrel likes. From my limited experience I would suggest a 1:9 or 1:8.

FWIW, I run a 5.56 BCM midlength with 1/7 twist. I have run both 55gr handloads and IMI 193 in one session and 77gr SMKs in another. On a 100 yard range, the 55 grain loads grouped right around 1.25" while the 77 SMK loads in the same barrel at the same range grouped just a tick under .6" for the best group of the day followed up by a .8" group just as a sanity check. I also have a 5.56, 1/9 upper that will shoot sub 1" groups with the same 55 grain ammo at the same range. As was stated above, 1.25" groups definitely would put both uppers in the "minute of yote" category. I'd say the unknown here is the Wylde chamber.

My 1/7 Colt barrel loves 55gr Federal Tactical Bonded as well as FMJ practice ammo. In the 10 years and thousands of rounds, not a hiccup. Now the farthest I shoot is about 150yrds.

I wouldn't run 35gr bullets in a 1:7 but for anything above that you should be just fine. Who knows, 35gr pills may work just fine as well, I have no experience to say one way or another. But the RPMs you'd be getting for that would be quite insane. (the 35gr hornady NTX 223 load in a 1:7 twist would be rocking 411,360rpm... Where as a 55gr XM193 would be at 329,088rpm) Formula is: MV x (12/ twist rate in inches) x 60 = RPM.

I get outstanding accuracy with my 1:7 using 55gr bullets. I've never tried anything heavier than 62gr.

I have both 1:9 and 1:7 barrels to shoot with. A rock river 1:9 heavy barrel AR and my tavor. So far my tavor with a 1:7 will out shoot that rock river with 55gr bullets.

I ran everything from 40-77 in the PSA mid-length 1:7 I used to own. Shot everything fine, just like it was supposed to. A good friend has had the same luck thru both his 1:7 ARs, as well as the new 1:9 he just got.

I have the 1/7 on one of my truck guns, only shoot 60 gr whatever through it with great success. The 1/8 will do a very good job with about any weight or length bullet. My 1/9 shoots 40 gr varmints lights out with 2230 powder!!!

I do 1/8" when building bolt rifles, solely due to blank availability. 1/7" is typically more available in AR barrels as mil-spec fever still hold sway. The idea that twist rate affects accuracy (or velocity) is wives tales, and you'll not find a difference between the two, given all the other givens align.

I assume you are looking at the PSA barreled upper? I am interested in this upper if you decide to buy please inform us of your experience with it I think it will make a poor boys dmr rifle for me and I plan to use it to about 600 yards I assume 556 can make it there

I have a couple uppers I have built for coyote hunting. 1 is a great 20" 1/7 in .223 Wylie the other is a 18" 1/9 in 5.56 . The 1/7 shoots best with 53gr vmax and the 1/9 likes 55gr hp/bt . I guess you'll just have to find out what it likes.

What Yeah said. The Wylde is a chamber designed to accommodate Remington .223 and 5.56x45 both, as subtle changes were made to the .223 case when the 5.56 case was specified. I don't have the time in nor any data to comment on how well it really does, but I do have a couple of Wyldes and enough 5.56s to stun an ox, in case I ever get the time to test.
