Does anyone know the legality of having a rifle in your trunk for emergency self defense situations?

Does it matter if it is chambered, just mag loaded, or completely empty?

I can't find any code on this subject in the law.

You can't find a code because it's perfectly legal in any of the configurations you have listed

Agree with Nate.

My new Kel-Tec Sub2000 sits in my truck along with at least one friend. Folds in half for easy storage, unfolds and takes 32 round Glock mags for some nice firepower.

Good to know.

My choices were an SKS or a Sub 2000. I went with the SKS. It was cheaper and pushes a rifle bullet. I figure if the G19/XD9SC can't get the job done the SKS will =).

I have been thinking of keeping some sort of shotgun in my truck. Unfortunately the only shotgun I have is a Remington 1400, and its WAY too long for that application.

Considered my Marlin .30-30 for the job, but I like her too much to bump and bang it and just leave it in the truck.

I just carry extra mags and ammo in my truck and take them out when I leave it.
