30-30 Project.. Need some wisdom

I'm a reader of SWAT magazine and a few months back they ran an article about what they called the "Rural Assault Rifle."

The premise was to create a cheap assault rifle that could be kept around the house, truck or where ever without striking too much fear in the general populous or nosey neighbors etc. etc.

What they did was find a cheap used lever action 30-30 and have the metal parts re-coated (I'll have to reference with what or how) and had the plastic stock and fore grip painted and stippled. They then added a red-dot optic and took it to a local "tactical rifle course." Aside from the obvious loss in magazine capacity, the gun proved just as effective if not more so because of the added power in the 30-30 over the .223.

Ok now where I need the wisdom. Is this really practical? I'm looking for a "truck gun" just to keep around for whatever, from casual range shooting to rodents or the always imminent zombie attack. Is this project something you great gun God’s see as relevant and applicable, or have I got the wrong caliber, wrong gun and wrong idea??
