I am planning a Elk Hunt, but would like a few ideas of the best type of gun to buy?

Remington Model 700™ SPS™

in .308 or .300 win.

Kimber Montana in 7mm-08. Hard to beat in 308 as well.

Savage 10fl is proved to be the best out of the box gun out there... especially for the price range 308 is just fine but if you want to step up in the future for a northwest hunt you might want 7mm 300 winmag or .338 L

What brand is the Best bang for the buck?

Not traditional, but what about an AR15 chambered in 6.5 Grendel?

There is a documented 405 yard 1 shot Elk kill with an AR chambered in the 6.5 Grendel. The shot went through and through exiting the far shoulder and the Elk dropped where it stood.

Personally I'd want a lighter rifle for hiking in the mountains. 8.5# without a scope is a lot to tote.

I'd want a lighter contour barrel and lighter stock to bring that weight down to 6.5# give or take.

My dad has killed 4 really nice elks with the same rifle and he has a remington model 700 .270. He said it really puts a whollop on them.
