Quick Question.....(rifled slugs)

The fins on a rifled slug allow the slug to be able to compress a bit while passing through different chokes, yet still keep good pressure in a cylinder choke. Many different chokes are used by different people to shoot rifled slugs through. Not everyone uses the same choke and the slugs have to account for this difference somehow.

I use a modified chokes, on my daughters 870 20 ga and my mossberg 500 12 ga, to shoot rifled slugs.

The box syas: "Rifled slugs may be shot through any choke. But Improved Cylinder is best."

I would stick to cylinder or improved cylinder tubes for rifled slugs, or a rifled tube with sabot slug.

Could you expand on this concept. I'm interest in learning the specifics of how the fins accomplish this.

I only use these for home defense and the ocassional fam fire at the range. I have a mix of slugs and Buck loaded in them.

Most modern Foster slugs also have "rifling", which consists of thin fins on the outside of the slug. Contrary to popular belief, these fins actually impart no spin onto the slug as it travels through the air. Since the slug is fired at a supersonic velocity, the nose of the slug pushing a shockwave creates a vacuum on the side of the slug, where the fins are located. The actual purpose of the fins is to minimize the friction on both the barrel and projectile and allow the slug to safely be swaged down when fired through a choke, although accuracy will suffer and choke wear will be progressively accelerated when fired through any choke gauge tighter than open.
