.408 Chey-Tac

Hello,

I am thinking about purchasing a Chey-Tac .408. I am wanting to get into some really long range competition, sub-MOA 1000+ yards. Can anyone give me some pluses and minuses about this particular rifle.

Thanks,

INGunGuy

the $12,000 dollar price tag and the availability and $ of ammo. the in itself is not that special it's the round combined with the PDA that computes everything to dial in your shot that makes it accurate and makes up the bulk of the price tag. that being said I would totally buy one if I had the scrilla$$$

For the money, I'm fond of the M-310 series.

Being the cheapskate I am, I went directly to the manufacturer of the action - Lawton.

Actions

The 8500 is the action used in the CheyTac M-310.

Bobby has a group buy going for $795 including the scope rail of your choice here:

8500 Lawton actions. - Sniper's Hide Forums

Have them barrel it for you, or use your favorite gunsmith. Add your 700 pattern trigger.

McMillan, Manners and Mcree all inlet for the 8500.

If you haven't already done so - look at the 375 CheyTac.

It is a sweet rifle very accurate and a great long range gun... but it costs sooooo much. If you have the money for the CheyTac then spend it. Personally I think I would prefer a custom built 50BMG. You could have a rifle built exactly the way you want it (barrel, stock, action, ect...) to get sub 0.5 MOA accuracy and spend less than you would on a CheyTac. Also, if you get it in 50BMG, or 338lapua, or something ammo is a lot easier to find and cheaper.

i think the m200 intervention (the rifle off of the movie Shooter) is up to $16000 i would honestly get the barret .416 and reloading would be a must. unless you are loaded with cash.

I know at one time, they had two different rifles. One was military and the other was civilian. The civilian was the less of the guns. The gun itself is a fine piece, but the ammo is hard to come across.

they use to offer a long range shooting course that you could take and when the course was over no matter how long down the road you decided to buy one you get a discount on it. but im not sure they still offer it.

ok everyone, let me explain a bit better about what I am wanting to accomplish. I have been shooting my .243 at around 380 yards. I have NO real experience at super long range shooting, 1000+ yards. I was reading a bit about the .408 which at the time seemed like a really good rifle for reaching way out there. The one I saw and I almost died when I was told the price was for the .480 chey-tac, a niteforce 5022X50 scope, 10 5 round boxes of ammo, 2 7 round mag boxes all for the price of 15K now at 5 dollars a round, that is 250 bucks worth of ammo that I can reaload myself. ok, so the thing comes with mag boxes, well for precision shooting, you manually load, so those are a no big deal addition. the niteforce is another VERY pricey addition to the rifle. I am not up on the cost, but I would say that it is in the 5-6K range. So, for the time being lets just say that a 15K rifle would be at the ULTIMATE EDGE of my buying power. My wife will probably shoot me with the damn thing if I buy it, but that is because I refuse to spend that kind of money on a car, but I will on a firearm... LOL... BUT seriously, am I barking up the wrong tree for having no formal training in super long range shooting. I dong think hitting the 375-390 range is too shabby. Heck I was pretty happy that I hit all 4 shots in the black. Should I get some formal training before buying a rifle and just practice more with my .243? Any and all info would be greatly appreciated.

I would suggest getting a 308 as the next step. I have the Savage BAS, and have been extremely happy with it. 500 yards doesn't seem to be a problem for it at all. The 308 and the 300 win mag are good rifles to take the next step.
