I appreciate all the comments. I have pretty much decided on keeping the wood furniture. I understand everyone saying get an AR or AK, but personnally I don't like the looks of either of those. I have shot the AR platform more than probably any other gun and have never been all crazy for it. I do think I want to shorten the barrel to make it more easily handled. I can't decide between the leupold 2.5 scout scope or the Burris 2.75 scout scope.

I say definetly keep the wood and chop the barrel if you can get it done. Synthetic on a lever is just not right. Especially if you have a piece of walnut. I was gonna put together something similar on a 336 I had, but ended up trading it off before I could chop it. Yes your going to lose some juice with a shorter barrel, but sure would make for one quick handling nice brush gun.

What do you plan on using this gun for? That would help us determine what you should do to it. As a target gun sawing off the barrel is not such a good idea but the way you speak I get the feeling you want this for self defense. Don't get me wrong, that's fine, lever and bolt guns can be sweet for home protection. So... what do you plan on using this for?

I plan on using it as a truck gun. I also will probably do some deer hunting when I visit my parents in Alabama. Other than that I don't know what it will be used for. I know that I like the feel of the short barreled lever guns. I am going to strip the wood down this week and refinish it.
