Do you need a buffer detent on an AR15?

Took apart my rifle, the post on the detent broke off. Does the rifle require it to function? Seems to me like its a convenience part instead of necessity.

The gun will probably function without it, but you'll have some issues when you go to break the gun open for cleaning or maintenance.

Cheap part, easy to find. Replace it.

Not required to function... I've tested this, though not by choice.
The post does make it slightly easier to get the upper on and off.

Should work okay you'll just have to deal with a jack in the box every time you want to remove the upper
