![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | mauser 98k help! I went to the range today and had a great time shooting my German Mauser 98k. I gave it quite a workout and then came home to clean it (I flushed it with water at the range per corrosive ammo cleaning techniques). Some maybe pertinent details: It sprinkled a little at the range while I shot it, I shot about 100rds in 10 rapid fire clusters, I have had it to the range about 4 times and only in the last 2 visits has it finally proved to have the last of the cosmoline oozing out of it (I'm worried about the wood drying out now). The problem: When I got home to thoroughly clean it the metal ring closest to the butt was very difficult to remove and I saw a crack starting in the wood (prior to getting it off). after cleaning everything I cannot get it back on without undue pressure and a crack in the top (smaller) piece of wood flexes when I compress the two pieces of wood together with my hands to simulate the pressure the ring is feeling. Is the wood swollen from getting too hot, did the rain play a role in this, do I let it set for a day or so and try again, sand it,....I have a lot of very logical thoughts but no experience. Any help would be appreciated. ![]()

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Got alot going against the stock right now: Age, heat, rain, ammo shooting, etc... Its probably just giving up the ghost now. There are interesting alternatives: If you get the Midway Catalogue, check out their stocks they offer for the Mauser 98 action. You can "semi-sportize" the gun. You should also be able to find either undamaged stocks online (for maintaining the military situation) or I have seen SEVERAL makers of replacement military style stocks that look fantastic. If you are not looking to spend that much into your Mauser, you can send her to me for adequate and safe "disposal" ![]()
