Galil

I've recently become enamored of guns made in Israel. I have a Jericho 941 (Baby Eagle) in .45ACP and a Desert Eagle in .50AE. Both are sweet.

I am wondering if it is possible to buy a Galil, semi-auto of course. I have been unable to find a current importer. I would love to add a rifle to my small collection of Israeli arms.

Does anyone have info?

Addendum: I wore my IDF cap to work today. Gee, I hope I don't offend anyone with it.

Century Arms currently manufactures a Galil clone called the Golani. It is made with a mix of US and Israeli parts. Pricing runs around $700. As with most Century products, reviews have been mixed. Several INGO members own these.

Real Galils have not been imported in many years and they are very collectible right now.

If you want a real Galil, be prepared to pay few thousand dollars for it. They are more of a collectors gun now than a shooter.

If you want a shooter Century Golanis are great guns and they look very much like the original Galil AR. I have 2 and they group like an AR-15, but are basically a beefed up AK in .223.

My personal favorite Galil is the Israeli Galil ARM, it is basically a Galil with bipod and carry handle and a bit longer barrel. They are usually deployed with the 50rd mag.

Have you considered looking into Val-met's? (Sp?)
I'm pretty sure they're the Galil's little brother.

The Valmets are Finnish and while some models have similarities with the Galils, they are a different animal.

I like the galils also.

There was a version made in 7.62 NATO and there is someone making a custom one in 7.62 X 39 that uses AK mags...for 2K$!

Actually, the Galil is the Valmet's little brother. After the Six Day's War when the FAL failed miserably in the desert environment, the IDF set out to create a new weapon that didn't fail in the sandy environment. Eventually the Galil won out with it first being chambered in .308, then switched over to .223. The first Galils were actually converted Valment M-76s. With that being said, the Galil is a beefier AK because of the milled receiver. Be wary of the Golanis though, because some have milled receivers and some have cast ones. They don't have chrome-lined barrels, and the surplus parts in them are not Israeli! I had one and it was junk. The parts in them are from South American countries where they were not properly maintained. Prices have come down on the real-deal Galils(ie IMI, Action Arms). Look on GunBroker or join over on UZITalk.com. I'm a member there and you can find a lot more info on them over there. There also always seems to be at least a couple for sale on there too. Good luck in your search!

The Golani's are part-Israeli, at least some of their parts are Israeli. If you can get a real one, go for it. For most people who will never get one, the Golani's are the next best thing.

Mine did not want to function very well from the factory. It got sent back to Century and what came back didn't look much like my original gun except for the serial #. We don't really know what they did. It has ran perfect for about 2000 rounds so I keep my fingers crossed, but I think they fixed right. You will have to be careful with the mags you feed it, there are some really beat up junkers out there, and the gun didn't like those very much. That being said, the barrels must be nice because mine will shoot pretty much toe-to-toe with Dad's 6940.

You probably wouldn't really want to take an original out and beat on it anyway, so where is the fun in that?

There is always a parts kit, and you can find someone to build it for you.
