Barrel length on coach gun

The question is how long due the barrels have to be on a shotgun. my understanding is 18 inches,but from what point due you measure? is it from the breech or further up? Looking for info as I have the oppurtunity to purchase a Stevens 12 ga double barrel,coach gun. need advise, Thanks,Cain71

I THINK its measured from the breech up. most coach guns have 20" bbls...or is this just a sawed off double?
the whole shotgun cant be shorter than 26"

Take a dowel rod, drop it down the barrel, mark the rod & measure. If it's less than 18" disassemble it, store the bbl & action @ different locations & start the paperwork on your SBS.

the mesurement is from the bolt face, with the bolt closed. also dont forget the requirement for the over all leangth of the shotgun (26 inches)

Thanks for the info,it is legal according to measurement from the bolt fave to the end of barrel,18 1/4 inches. It does look like it has been cut off, but done very well. overall length over 26 in so I guess I'm fine. New home defense gun? I think maybe so. let me see how it shoots,Thanks again for your input,Cain 71

Don't forget to make sure the gun is cocked. Stevens firing pins protrude into the chamber when the gun is not cocked and can throw your measurement off slightly. Not much but that 1/8 of an inch is critical sometimes when it comes to legality.
