i bought a savage at bass pro a few years ago and it became my go to gun overnight. anything smaller than a yote i will aim at with confidence up to 150 Yd i sighted it in a 70 yd and just leaned where it hits. the ammo is cheap enough that you can do this and still have fun. if hunting for food you must head shot. miss once and you will figure out why.

which ever one you get, its a must that you put some great optics on it. i got the savage with the bull barrel, and the bsa scope that adjust for the 17 and 20gr bullet.

A friend has cz bolt action in .17 hmr it is a beautiful and extremly accurate rifle.

I think the Marlin and Savage guns are the best for the dollar, best period could probably be argued in to infinity but my price point for dollar verses accurate gun with features I like = Marlin or Savage bolt. Nice trigger and easy to work on if you want to improve it, accurate enough to having me pulling my hair out trying to decide if it's me, the gun, the amo, the rest, the wind, ... causing that one frigging deviation in a 5 shot group, then a 10 shot group,...

I think the guns and the ammo shine to the point of blinding when taken squirrel hunting.

I wanted an hmr for some time and ended up getting a Remington 700 spsv in 17 Remington fireball. It shoots out to 4000 fps. Haven't done anything with it other than sighting it in. Factory ammo is expensive at nearly $1.50 a round but is reloadable.

Another nod for the CZ 452, it has a nice quality look and feel and is now my son's favorite rifle. Very accurate out of the box and easy to tune.

I purchased it from KS&E in Indy, they had the best price and were very helpful

He shot his first groundhog with it. I asked him to shoot it in the chest to see what damage there would be. It dropped immediately and his whole body was mush.
