![]() ![]() | Elementry Question I have been looking to buy a Mosin-Nagant and have come across the following: "Refinished to Excellent Condition, bores will not be in excellent condition, but will still be serviceable." Is there a way to recondition the bores? Or should I even bother? |

![]() ![]() | depends on how it shoots. a great percentage of the time, these types of "rough" bores shoot better dirty. i've been using the tubbs kit, especially on new barrels, and it really slicks up the bore. took my friends mor ar15 and turned into a 1/2 mor rifle. ymmv

I've found that Mosins shoot best when you're prone in a partially-destroyed fountain.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Unfortunately, Tubbs doesnt make a kit that uses a .311 bullet, but also, due to bore variations, it would make little difference anyway. Hand lapping (using lapping compound and a cleaning kit), rather than hot lapping (firing the compound laced bullets) is a fine art, not perfected by many and not prefered by those who even have experience in it. I have tried this on occasion and have been successful. However, it is very very slow and takes more patience than the average milsurp restorer has. I have lapped all my mosins and noticed at the orchard a definite tightening of groups overall at 100 yards (usually by about .15 to .25" group reduction). Unfortunately, this lapping process is very time consuming and CAN destroy a perfectly good rifle. Its not an undertaking for the average shooter as the "I want it done now" comes into play. Too many brushes with the compound later and now you have a bore fit for only a shot shell. It took me about 3 weeks of gentle cajoling and work here and there to get a few of my M44s lapped. The best thing I would suggest for a Mosin accuracy freak is get a bent handle (you can find them lots of places) that are designed for the ATI mount (but it isnt the ATI bolt mod, its a whole new bolt) and mount a decent telescopic. Secondly, recrown the barrel. This may be a gunsmithing thing. Most if not all Mosins I have seen are horrid in this right. I have only recrowned one of my Mosins (91/38) and it is superb. Bedding the stock is third. ATI makes those crappy synthetic stocks, but handcarving yours may be a better idea (johnturboguy knows my carving skills already, shouldnt have gotten rid of that rifle). A Huber Concepts trigger! Those eliminate the vague Mosin trigger and are adjustable. Lastly, eliminate your ideas that milsurp ammo is accurate. Even the best stuff has horrible variations! Handloading (while not cost effective for that round) combined with the other accurizing effects, will have EXTRAORDINARY accuracy from your Mosin. There is a company, escapes me right now, that makes aluminum pillars for the Mosin's action, the bent bolts and after you do the barrel prep and recrown, you will have a rifle par many of the Remington and Mauser rebarrels, not to mention putting anyone with a K31 to shame. Alot of folks will tell me that this is too much work for a Mosin. Parts cost is only about 150-200 at tops. For around 300 bucks and a lot of personal work (carving, machining) you can have a wonderful rifle!
