![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Spent a few hours breaking in AR Spent several hours at range today breaking in the AR I bought at the last 1500. (yes, I've been THAT busy )I got a nice deal from AAC on a DPMS in 5.56 and picked up a NcSTAR mark III scope for it. I shot and cleaned...shot and cleaned...shot 2 and cleaned... felt guilty... shot and cleaned... ...The guy beside me, "Jim" was extremely nice but he was definitely making me feel small as he ate away his wee little 1 inch targets from 100 yards with his Savage model 12 .223 BVSS. His scope was the size of my arm. ![]() Moved up to 3 shot groups and started adjusting my ever shrinking little scope between cleanings. A friend showed up and shot a couple of his rifles. Fired his .308. Big fun ![]() Jim offered to let me shoot his. Me likey. That gun shot sweeeeet.Up to five round groups and final tweaking... getting more accurate. Down to 3 inch groups of 5 but I really expected better by this point. Had to leave. I do hope to get a little better accuracy but I'm not expecting miracles. Next time will be more fun... but this was a good day ![]()

![]() | ATM, does it have the A1 or A2 sights on it? As a bynote, I still haven't had a chance to go shoot my DPMS AR-15, and I've had it around now for a couple weeks. I might have to ask for a day off next week to make the time!! Just don't want to go alone because I'm afraid this break-in thing is going to be mighty boring. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Rifle came with A2 front sight post, flattop upper. I have not bought a railmount rear sight yet. I bought a riser and cheap (I know) scope to get me going. But the group buy lower... that one will be special. SBR 9mm or long 6.5 Grendel? Dunno yet. (The hunger... the BRD has me )

![]() | What are you using for a barrel? Chrome lined? How about for ammo? The accuracy you describe is well within mil-spec for chrome lined barrels and mil-spec ammo. If you put a match grade barrel on it, free float it, and shoot good ammo, you should be able to get 1" groups out of an AR at 100 m, no problem. I've seen dime size groups at that distance. Of course, that all costs money (and your skills have to be up to the task). If it has a 16" barrel, as is currently so popular, I wouldn't rely on it past 200 yards anyway - not because of accuracy issues (which can be fine), but because by that point, out of a 16" bbl., the velocity drops to the point where you can't depend on reliable bullet fragmentation out of FMJ. If one uses SP or HP ammo the situation changes a bit. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Not a chrome lined or match barrel (guess I stayed home.) It is 16". I was shooting Remington UMC .223 MC and JHP. I have no expectations of driving tacks- I simply want it to be as accurate as it can be. Primary use will not be near a bench rest (though I could probably get hooked on that, too ) Thanks for the observations![]() Oh yeah, MUCH better than work ![]()
