I would like to un-register to Vote. In fact denouncing my citizenship is beginning to look good. Neither of the candidates offers much hope for this country, and I do not think it really matters which one gets in. This country needs to be humbled before any meaningful change will ever happen.

I always suspected I would end up running to Canada some day, I just never imagined it would be from our Government or lack there of.

Spell checked and grammar checked for those who give a snot.

I knew there were others with issues. Thanks for your honesty. I consider this forum a reasonably safe place to discuss even the most "dubious" sentiments on voting Any others?

Strong statements Mr. Hoppes.

You might not like Canada so much either. I guarantee you won't be open carrying your firearm while there.

I too am frustrated with our choices. I feel that McCain is basically handing over the election to Obama. I don't love McCain, but I like him a lot better than what we're about to get.

Personally, I'm staying put right here in the USA to fight to make things better.

I've seen "duty" a couple of times and would just like to submit that this sentiment, while respectable as a personal choice, was a common word on my list of debatables.

One can take a right upon themselves as a duty. I respect that. However, when one ascribes one of my rights to me as a duty, I object.
My personal duty stops at respecting - even defending that right(which I have and will), not exercising it. Once it becomes a mandate... it ceases to be a right IMHO.

Thanks for the responses. Some of my "issues" have already been preempted.

And put that thing in a hammock, TomN

I'm just gonna vote from the rooftops, much easier that way. It takes about as much pressure from the finger to press an electronic voting machine as it does a properly tuned trigger!

I guess that counts as "issues" and "dubious" in one post

I have relished the many arguments that my non-voting attitude has sparked. I wonder how many have similar history or are currently still there? I am not looking for argument so much as letting you all know that I have been slowly and surely moved from apathy by many of the members' writings and actions on this forum. I will follow up later with a small assortment of my past (and lingering) issues that kept me from the polls and a few knee-jerk responses I've heard that barely warranted debate (except for the love of the game)

Feel free to chastise my past but be aware that this thread is intended to address real mindsets that still prevail and can be defended. A more effective plan to bring others along is more desirable than just a good argument. I have been active in other ways but not at the polls. I will start with my long running #1 reason and add more later:

The whole electoral system is broken. My vote doesn't count.

ETA: OK, I'll throw in my favorite (easily refuted) knee-jerk response as well:

If you don't vote, you have no right to complain.

(Please don't use that one on a thinking non-voter.)

Ahh well...Your vote doesn't really matter...In Indiana.

With that said, in my relatively short voting career I have chosen to vote every time.

ATM, I see voting as one of our freedoms.

You are free to vote without being educated.
You are free to vote based on emotion.
You are free to vote based on who you think will win.
You are free to vote on who seems most likable.
You are free to vote on who has the best hair.
You are free to vote like your parents.
You are free to vote on the promises you hear.
You are free to vote for an image.
You are free to write in a candidate not listed.
You are free to not vote at all.
The point is to maintain that freedom, you should vote for who you think will best preserve it for us all.
They say freedom isn't free and to vote seems like such a small thing to do, to make sure freedom is always alive and well.

When I turned 18, the way it was explained to me from my Marine grandpa was, "Over all of the years, there have been countless men and women fighting and even dying to preserve your rights, even the one to vote. Don't tell me you are just going to throw away something that some have given all to preserve."

Needless to say I even picked him up to go to the Legion to vote that year, and I've voted every time since.
