Read my kids the Declaration of Independence...

I have read the Declaration many times but the wife and I decided it was time to start a new tradition in the house.

So last night after dinner we sat the kids down and read them the Declaration of Independence. I knew that 2 of them would have a hard time understanding it (age 7 and 9) but they thoughtfully listened, asked some interesting questions and overall enjoyed the time together.

I figured with what they are not learning at school (My 14 y/o's history teacher this year tried to tell her that Pearl Harbor happened because the USN was out on "manuevers" WTF????) and the current political climate that it is important to let them know why we are the United States of America..

Does anyone else do this with your kids???

Yes I have had many conversations with my 12 year old daughter about the United States and the Constitution. Every history book she has says the USA is a democracy and maybe has had 2 pages on the Constitution. She now understands we are a republic and that the majority(ie democracy) has to operate within the means of the law(constitution).

The Navy was out on "manuvers"? are you serious? this is what they are actually teaching? If this is what is happening you need to contact the school board and get their reaction or the teachers resignation. That is insane!

I do like you new tradition and just might start doing the same with my kids (12 and 14yrs) to make sure it is taught to them instead of letting the public school system do it

Oh yea, "manuvers"....My 11 year old son is a WW2 history nut like me and I asked him, "Bub, where were the American carriers on December 7th???" He goes, "Not on manuvers Dad!"

I sent a strongly worded letter to the teacher and the principal. Problem is teachers out home have "tenure" Again, WTF???? Junior high and HS teachers with tenure?? That just tells me that teachers that are not worth a hoot in hell can stay with protection...Our school districts teaching tree is very straight..If you graduated from there or your dad, mom, uncle, ect works there, you are hired..........

I had one teacher tell our class that the atomic bombs were dropped on Japan a couple of months after Pearl Harbor.

45... that's a couple, isn't it?

To the OP and to all who have done this, bravo! Very good, and I am heartened to see that some of the young men and women have taken the bull by the horns and started making moves to return to a Constitutional government. I believe it was Sam Adams who made the statement to the effect of it not taking a large bonfire but rather thousands of small brush fires to be started in minds.

I for one am glad to see that not only is the spark not extinguished in my country, but that it is instead blazing brightly.

May God bless you all, even more than He already has.

Happy birthday, America.
Bill

Ah yes, the brushing over history because it isn't on a TEST (ISTEP, NWEA ). I guess we don't have to be accurate if we won't be tested on the subject! UGGGH!

Bless all of you that take the time to teach the consititution and American History to your children. My grandkids were watching the American Revolution on the history channel. Beats the heck out of Saturday cartoons!

Both my 11 yr old and my 14 yr old have pocket copies of the DoI and Constitution and I have frequent conversations about the concepts with them as it relates to current events. Often it is one of them who starts the conversations.

All of my children have been read the DoI AND the Constitution, my 14 year old was going nuts because of what he sees is going on now with the country. My 12 year old daugther now goes around asking people who they voted for. If they choose to tell her, and if someone tells her they voted for Obama, she responds, "Well then you are part of the problem with the country." if questioned about her response, normally a 12 year old wouldnt. She points out that Obama is a maxist-Socialist. His political aspirations are for total government control of all sectors in the USA, etc, etc etc. All because they know, they see it and cant even vote yet. Oh well, I guess everyone has an obligation to treach their children about history, the country, the government and what their responsibilities are to the country. Oh well getting off my pedestal.
