Obama Praises Islam as 'Great Religion'

I see no reason why the President (this one or any other) cannot praise ANY religion for its positive contributions. President Bush made it very clear that we were attacking the Taliban, not the Islam religion, not the Afghanistan nation, not the people. We have had many Presidents praise many Judeo-Christian denominations, we have honored the Dali Lama (a religious leader) and many others. So from that standpoint it is not unreasonable to praise the positive aspects of any religion.

What we must guard against are attempts to show favoritism to any religion or to the establishment or the exclusion of any religious theory.

If one is a Christian, one must understand and believe in the fundamental tenets of the faith. Jesus was very open and explicit in His proclamation that He is "The Way" and that no one shall come before the Father but through Him. This is essentially why He was crucified. Much of the NT warns about the advent of false religions, of which Islam is surely the leading example. Therefore, if you are a real Christian, you do not praise or hold a dinner (or attend one Senator Lugar) honoring a false religion.

I don't know, obviously, but I wonder if perhaps the Biblically-reported statement lost something in the translation and Jesus' meaning was that for one of his followers, that is, for a Christian, He was the Way, Truth, and Life, and for a Christian there was no way to the Father but through Him?
I am certainly not Christian, however I have every reason to believe that I have a place in God's House when I reach the end of my days here on earth. I also think each of you who follows to the best of your ability what you see God wanting of you has a similar place in His House.

You don't have to agree, of course.. but I guess we'll find out when I see you there, won't we?

Well, you can certainly believe that if you want, but it's just not the case.

And no, I am not trying to slam or offend you. The "lost in translation" anti-christian angle is all myth.

I'm not sure how you or anyone can say this without access to the original text for comparison. I'm also going to give the benefit of the doubt and say that your first sentence referred to the "lost in translation" part, and not to my stated belief that I have a place in God's House.

In addition, as I wrote privately, I am not anti-Christian, just for the record.

And yet Jesus himself was noted for supping with "publicans and sinners." He was able to say about someone to whom he, by his own words, was not sent, was able to say "Oh, woman, great is thy faith, be it unto thee even as thou wilt." And when the Roman asked for help for one of his servents it was the Roman _pagan's_ faith that Jesus praised, "Verily, I say unto you, I havenot found so great faith, no not in Israel."

No problem, Melensdad. Any bets on whether BH0 (that's Big Honkin' Zer0) celebrates (or even just marks/recognizes the days of) Rosh Hashana or Yom Kippur with big state dinners, ambassadors and members of Congress and the community?

It's not that he is recognizing Ramadan that is the problem. It's that he's recognizing Ramadan, bowing to the Saudi king, apologizing for America, and generally violating all of the Presidential conventions.... all starting with a lack of eligibility to the office.

I would be very surprised if he recognized either of the Jewish High Holy Days as he has this.

Well to all this I will agree. I do think he will show his hand and ultimately will take enough rope to proverbially hang himself with it. But it will be interesting to watch. I have no issues with him celebrating Ramadan but only if he also celebrates the major Holy days of other major religions.
