I'm not quite sure what you mean here. Do you mean that the guy kept the key? I'm confused. Could you clarify that please?

Sure. Sorry for the confusion. As I read the first part, it meant you should stay in the baggage check area (ticket counter) so that when they call for you for your key, you're there. When the TSA guy came to get me, he demanded my key or combination. I politely mentioned, "I thought I was supposed to be present when my case was opened?" and he replied with a frustrated/exasperated tone, "Either give me the key or the combination, or you can have the bag back!" I had no vehicle there and was short on time til my flight, so I gave him the key to the outer lockbox. He went into a keycard-secured area (leaving me in the baggage claim area) and came back a few minutes later with my key, telling me my bag had been cleared to be loaded.

I think what confuses me is that all bags are X rayed; can't they tell on an X ray that a slide is locked back and that there are no rounds in the firearm?

I had not the first minute's problem with anyone else that day or on my return trip, BTW.
