2008 and will increase a small amount in 2009. If the referendum is approved, the annual property tax will still drop by over $50 in 2010 and
remain constant from that point forward at an average of $1,120 for the next seven years on a home valued at $100,000.
Doesn't tell the whole picture. The state took over some school costs, which spreads the hurt among everyone in all 92 counties. The problem is the state is only going to be able to do that for so long, and then they will have to jack income taxes statewide. Personally, those who got a stay of execution so to speak (the folks in Meridian-Kessler, Butler-Tarkington with $11K/year property tax bills on a $400K home) will still end up paying a ton of money...because most of them have money.

Not only that, the state shell game only works for K-12. BG has other issues besides their school. They run their police department, own fire department, and 911 center. Had the state not taken over some of the K-12 costs, that $1,120 could have easily been $2,000 for all we know. Obviously BG still has funding issues outside their schools, as there is talk of consolidating their 911 center with Speedway. BG will be an interesting place to watch. During one meeting where local governments could complain about the property tax caps, two units showed up: The city of Gary and the Beech Grove public library system.

Fight the tax hike tooth & nail! Post signs, fliers, stickers. Run ads in the paper, craigslist. Talk to your fellow INGOers. It can be stopped.

I paid less than $200 this year for a house that was last appraised at $95k with .79 acres. I plan to start building my house next year on 18 acres of woods and 10 acres of farm ground. The house will be ICF construction over 2500 sq ft and a 50x80 pole barn. I expect to pay between $1000-1500 a year. This will be in the same school district.

People wonder why I drive 25 miles to work. I can buy alot more house for a lot less money out here and the taxes are exponentially lower. What I spend on gas is more than made up by lower taxes and property costs. My brother was looking at a house for sale near Southport that was listed at $230k and the taxes were $8k a year. Why you guys choose to put up with that crap, I don't know.

Anytime you vote to allow them to raise a cap, you can bet your *** that is what they will do. Sometimes they say it's temporary, sometimes they say it's a one time thing. Once they get the inch, spread em wide cause they want the whole mile.

I moved out of Massachusetts because those idiots voted themselves a higher state income tax. They were told, that they would lose school teachers, firemen, police, garbage collectors and many other governmental services. The idiots believed the hype. The sky is not always falling. If it is some government parasite telling you that it is, believe at your own risk.
