i am feeling cantankerous tonight. I feel the need to get this out of my system on the web rather than in the real world. Say we were wanting to take outlaw match to a whole new level. Other than safety rules what could we do......?

    1) Red scoring steel.
    2) Lost brass for revolvers only.
    3) Starting positions with dots turned off.
    4) upside down classic targets.
    5) Mixture of targets on the stage.
    6) Fault lines spray painted on the ground.
    7) Virginia Count with steel.
    8) Mandatory SHO or WHO to start a field course.
    9) Mandatory head shots only.

    I feel better now.

Open guns can't turn dots on period.

#3 is a ceiling-shot waiting to happen (notice Jakey didn't put his camera downrange anymore, after that night?)

But I like the idea of combining #7 and #8. We'll call it "Bullseye." You're a devious one, Coach.

include an element of luck (eg playing card draw determines shoot vs no-shoot targets)
    all steel, no paper.
    include a "stage gun"
mixed number of rounds per target on a stage
    "blind" stages (no walkthrough)
limit all divisions to same # of rounds in the mag
"bonus targets" either good for lots of extra points or time reduction

I think stage gun would be cool.

most of those I've listed I've seen in a stage.... either idpa, 3-gun, or an outlaw match, or just plain illegal stages. some of those were the most fun stages I ever shot. some were the most frustrating. sometimes even 'illegal' stages can be a lot of fun.

stage guns can be cool if they work. they create lots of anger and fairness issues if they are jamomatics.

for L1 matches, I wish the rules had a little more leeway for fun stuff...

    I agree.
USPSA has too many rules and it is getting worse as they are getting more numerous.

an illegal stage that could cause much bunching of ladies undergarments for some folks...

at buzzer, open briefcase, look at suit of card inside, that suit is the no-shoot (the paper in the first array has the 4 suits stenciled on).

fun stage. made for some thinking and some laughs.

egads, a long course that specifies when and where targets may be engaged?

These days, to accomplish the same shooting challenge and follow the teachings of the church of freestyle, 3 hours of course construction has to happen....

    • Set up and allow shoot through targets. Gets interesting when you start having no shoots partially behind shoot targets.
    • Allow one mulligan per match.
    • Smaller steel (Brent loves his 3" texas star)
    • Chrono with weighted scoring. HF = Pts/Time * (1+(Actual PF - Minor/Major PF)*.015) ie. you'd get a ~22% bonus if you were 140PF when min PF is 125
    • With stage gun, mag has one dummy round loaded in it at random by RO
    • Have multiple start positions. At make ready, you draw a number to determine your start position
    • Wager on your time before your squad shoots. something like <0.5s difference = -1s bonus, .05s to 1.5s = nothing, 1.5s to 3s = +1s penalty, >3s = +2s penalty
