It is for whenever normal communications fail. (Lars is admittedly lacking in tin foil but I can forgive him anyways. )

Historicly, Hams have been pressed into service as long as the Hobby/Service has been around.
I call it a Service rather than a hobby, even though we may be happily Communicating with our neighbors or with others around the world,( in the mean time making new friends and having a ball) we are testing & optimizing & understanding what our limitations & abilities truly are. Practicing for whenever we may need to be pressed into service. Every Ham I've ever known is a volunteer and would be more than willing to help in any situation

Lars, I forgot what you suggestion was as to a starter portable unit in the $150 price range. Something to get started with and move up into your $400 unit later.

Basically looking for basic, portable, but able to be used to study for the tests and get feet wet with.

Please advise.

He says the Yaesu FT-60R is about the only one he'd recommend in that price range. AES has them at $189.99, but you might find one used in the $150 range.

I might study for theses tests and take em when I redeploy (because I need another expensive hobby). Can you take them online by any chance?

But as far as I know, you must take the tests in person.

Eh, it's something to do while i'm here. Whether I use it or not. Certifications/Licenses pretty much never hurt you regardless of what they are.

So I just ordered all 3 ARRL books, 1 is getting sent here, and the latter 2 or getting sent to the house. I want to read up on it while i'm here before leave in January. Hey Lars, any chance you can give me the test to get my technicians License in mid-January. Then I'll read up on the other 2 for the last 7 months I'm here and take those tests upon return to the states.
