![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Anyone else Preping for SHTF? Also know as TEOTWAWKI (The End of the World as We Know It). I'm not really a survivalist, I don't have a cabin in the wood and practice eating bark. I am however very concerned with the current state of our country. All our rights and freedoms are being slowly eroded and not so slowly since 911. On Christmas Day 2000, my family had returned from north texas to our rented home in Hope, AR (Home of Klipsch Audio). At the Red River we ran into sleet and it continued thru the night. At 11:00pm we lost power and started hearing the trees start to come apart under the weight of the ice. We lost water service the next morning. No stores were open, No gas stations could pump gas. SHTF in miniature all across Arkansas and North Texas. I had 1 - .45 cal Kentucky Long Rifle and no other firearms. Luckily I had stocked 2 - cases of soup and we had the staples and some canned milk. We lived on soup and biscuits for 5 days until the water & power came back on. We were renting an old house with gas bathroom heaters and a gas fireplace so we were warm. We used Ice melt off the roof to flush the toilets. I was stupid! I knew I should have had 72 hour kits for everyone and more food stored in the house. It was our third rented house in three states in under 2 yrs, my only excuse. Since then I've been working on getting prepared so I wont get caught helpless and w/o food water. I started buying Firearms, Camping Gear, and storing food and water. I think I finally have the guns & ammo thing covered. LOL But I'm still working on the rest. Water is the hardest due to it's shear bulk. I started this thread to feel out some local folks on Ideas & suggestions for getting better prepared. Also want to field the idea of some group buys on bulk items. In other words how many of you share my personal lunacy. LOL

| BOFH ![]() | I've started really thinking about it. I'm not quite ready, but my other Hobby (Ham Radio) has a strong focus on when SHTF. We (ham radio ops) were there for Katrina, 911, etc. etc. etc. I know that my personal Bug Out Kit, will include three firearms. Each of extremely common Caliber. .45acp, 12 gauge, and .223 Rem. I figure it can't hurt to carry three of the most common caliber weapons in this country. Makes finding ammo in a pinch easier than if I have a 5.7x28 PS90 I'm trying to feed. I should go through the ARES / RACES disaster preparedness documents, and list here what they claim is vitally important in a disaster kit. I'll post it back here.

| BOFH ![]() | These are both geared towards Ham Radio Operators Actually going into an affected area with the intent of assisting relief efforts. (Usually by providing communications for rescue workers etc.) However many of the items they want you to have apply for SHTF and you're Bugging out. Wisconsin ARES Ultimate Go Kit (PDF) 12 Hour Deployment Gear (Word Document) I might suggest those REALLY worried about SHTF consider actually getting a Ham Radio License and gear. If anyone is interested, I'd be willing to help study for the tests. I could also be convinced to bring some of my gear to an IN Gun Owners picnic and demo some of what can be done.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | If there is enough interest maybe we can justify a sub forum for preping. I have a some sources for equipment and supplies. I mostly watch for sales and bargains, like the MRE deal I posted. I ended up getting 8 cases in addition to the entrees I already had. The problem is covering all eventualities. IMHO Will your house be usable? Will you be forced to Bug Out? there are so many ways things can go bad, starting with a gas shortage to war. If ya'll are interested I'll post some links to sites for equipment and food etc.
