Find the pump and follow the line back, it may be under your addition if there is a crawlspace.

The well should be marked somehow. If it is under your house you should be able to see it. If it's outside there is usually something to show or cover where it is. If it is up under the house all you may see is a plastic pipe going into the ground. (If all else fails, call your buddy who is a plumber, he'll be able to find it.) Good luck.

Look for tell tale signs of a wellhead....

PVC pipe sticking out of the ground with a dome type cap on it and a smaller piece of electrical conduit running up it's side
a black piece of water pipe about an inch or so sticking out of the ground, it is a vent tube

You could also find it using witching sticks... or copper wire

Modern wells look just like csaws describes (http://www.make-my-own-house.com/images/wellcasing.jpg). Older wells often are set into a pit and covered with a hatchway of some sort, or sometimes a round concrete lid. Your best bet is to locate where the well water inlet passes into the house, then examine your property on that side of the house. Should you locate a well located in a pit, you should be sure to never use it for drinking water, since pits are known for collecting surface water and allowing contaminants into the well.

If all else fails you can contact IDEM at (317)232-8603 and ask for the Drinking Water Branch. They might be able to locate a record of your well through an address search.

Well, in a serious event lol... any water source is fine - provided that adequate filtering and purification is completed.

Funny how times change. I drank well water where the pump was in a pit for 40 years. Of course, I also drank unpasteurized milk for probably 25 years. Maybe the contaminations canceled each other out.

Mmmmm, un-pasteurized milk........ My in-laws have a large dairy farm. The milk in their fridge is always straight from the 'tap'.

Perhaps it is just the conventional wisdom that has changed throughout the years. What if unpasteurized milk and old fashioned well water were actually "OK"? My great-grandpa grew up around all of that ... and he lived to be 92! I don't know lol.

I grew up on a dairy farm with both unpastureized milk and well water. I am convinced they are the best way to drink both. Kind of like Whiskey straight.
