I am diabetes type 2, insulin dependent, both long and short acting insulin. My body decided in the year 2000 to quit making ANY insulin, so I was insulin dependent from day 1 that it was found. Three of my 4 grandparents were diabetic, one brittle diabetic.

A couple of ideas for you:

- Talk to your endocrinologist about having an extra Rx on-hand in the case of a SHTF scenario where you would be unable to get to your doctor for another prescription.

- Some doctors, if you explain your fears, will help you create a small stockpile of reserve meds. Not usually painkillers or the higher-restricted meds, but insulin should not be much of a problem.

- I agree with Mr. Hoppes above. If you can reduce the need for your meds and keep the "extra" of the RX as a reserve, I would do it.

Remember, in a complete SHTF scenario, if worse comes to worst, veterinarian clinics stock insulin for animals, and it is the same insulin as adults take. Just make sure you take and eat a free dog treat out of the bowl as you make your way out the broken window you entered from!

A few things you may not know Try lots of onion and garlic in your diet.Just do not breath on me k?
Allium cepa: (onion)
Various ether soluble fractions as well as insoluble fractions of dried onion powder show anti-hyperglycemic activity in diabetic rabbits. Allium cepa is also known to have antioxidant and hypolipidaemic activity. Administration of a sulfur containing amino acid from Allium cepa, S-methyl cysteine sulphoxide (SMCS) (200 mg/kg for 45 days) to alloxan induced diabetic rats significantly controlled blood glucose as well as lipids in serum and tissues and normalized the activities of liver hexokinase, glucose 6-phosphatase and HMG Co A reductase [18, 19]. When diabetic patients were given single oral dose of 50 g of onion juice, it significantly controlled post-prandial glucose levels [20].

Allium sativum: (garlic)
This is a perennial herb cultivated throughout the world. Allicin, a sulfur-containing compound is responsible for its pungent odour and it has been shown to have significant hypoglycemic activity [21]. This effect is thought to be due to increased hepatic metabolism, increased insulin release from pancreatic beta cells and/or insulin sparing effect [22]. Aqueous homogenate of garlic (10 ml/kg/day) administered orally to sucrose fed rabbits (10 g/kg/day in water for two months) significantly increased hepatic glycogen and free amino acid content, decreased fasting blood glucose, and triglyceride levels in serum in comparison to sucrose controls [23].
S-allyl cystein sulfoxide (SACS), the precursor of allicin and garlic oil, is a sulfur containing amino acid, which controlled lipid peroxidation better than glibenclamide and insulin. It also improved diabetic conditions. SACS also stimulated in vitro insulin secretion from beta cells isolated from normal rats [24]. Apart from this, Allium sativum exhibits antimicrobial, anticancer and cardioprotective activities.
Dang! How did you learn about that? I might add also that the body can regulate itself when given the proper nutrition and exercise.

I didn't know any of that, either. +1 for extremely useful info.

It kind of defeats the purpose of stocking up on everything. Are any of you in the same boat and if so what are your plans?
If you are dependent upon chemicals for living, depending on what those chemicals are, you are likely a goner if there is a massive breakdown of the current status of the US. I know a co-worker who believes that the way this country is going, full steam ahead to socialism/communism/etc., that we could see people start rioting and things get bad. I have no idea how bad it could get, but this guy is on like four pills _per day_, and his wife is in the same boat. Even with insurance, they are spending hundreds a month at their local drug store. If those pills don't get shipped, they will most likely die.

This is why it is _very_ important to try and control your health the best way possible. If your eating junk food daily, it is time now to control that and start getting back into shape. For folks with issues they were born with, hopefully they can find some natural alternative or something to keep them going.

Type 2 diabetics read up on a south american leaf called pata de vaca. It may lower blood sugar if made into a tea and consumed directly after eating.
