Comment on the kit BWF linked, the sparklite and it's tinder are great and I have them stashed in some of my gear BUT the sparklite is spark only, not a flint/hot spark, so you have to use it with a damn good tinder like the one they sell. It does not replace a swedish firesteel or similar flint. At the same time, I do not think there is a faster, lighter weight, more idiot proof way to start a fire other than a Triox bar, which you can also light with the sparklite. Another note, each piece of tinder is way more then you need to light one fire so you can make the tinder go far. Fox whistles are by the far the best small whistle I have ever used. Then of course, ditch the tin and use these LOKSAK | Resealable Element Proof Transport & Storage Bags Along the lines of small pocket gear, I have even field dressed a deer with one of these just to see if I could Toollogic Inc unusual gifts in looking for the link I noticed they made a small improvement since I bought mine 7 or 8 years ago. Only enhancement i made is Iwrapped 50 cal cotton patch material impreganted with vaseline around the flint. In other words a strip of cotton 1" wide and about 7-8 long. Cut off a square, rough up with knife tip, place on end of 12" long sharp stick, light it and you have long match that burns long too. Knife, whistle, flint all in one.
