  | Most commercial generators are on an automated timer and are set for monthly exercising of the genset. They run for 30 minutes or so to get to operating temps, and allow for any problems to show up. Leaks, clogged filters, low oil, etc will all show up within that time. Letting the genset get to temp also dries out any moisture that builds up in the engine, and spreads oil through the engine. Even an LP/vapor engine should be exercised regularly. A remote start DC circuit is fairly easy to build, and adding an electronic timer into the loop for exercising isn't too expensive.
