Are feds stockpiling survival food?

Perhaps some of the younger folks here are unaware that the government (generic term) has been stockpiling food, medicine, and other supplies for a very long time. Around 35 years ago some downtown Indpls buildings were demolished to make way for new buildings along E. Washington St. Just prior to the demolition of one, I was in the basement running out the winos. (I retired from IPD in '93) We found a large stack of tins marked Emergency Rations, or something to that effect. I recall they also had "Civil Defense" stamped on them. Each was probably 3-4 gallons in size and the contents were nothing but hard candy in a variety of flavors. I can't say how old they were at the time but they had clearly been abandoned.

There is also a national stockpile of various medications and, hopefully, your local Emergency Mgmt Agency has coordinated plans with your local health officials for distribution. I know plans exist and continue to be updated by the Marion County EMA (retired from there last Sept). I'd be a lot more concerned to find out such programs didn't exist. Whether you are aware of it or not, there are disaster preparedness plans being made and upgraded constantly at the local, state, and federal levels.

I remember going to Mammoth Cave in Ky back 30-40 years ago and being told it was a designated fallout shelter. Therefore it was stocked with large amounts of food and water.

I'm willing to bet that some of that stockpile goes into government personnel homes first (at taxpayer expense). And what is left over is stored for emergency situations for the public.

I don't know about Illinois but I can tell you a little about the planning for Marion County, IN. I worked for months on a mass prophylaxis plan which is intended to be carried out by local health officials in the case of a massive outbreak of some preventable disease. The plan's target is to inoculate/medicate some 800,000 people in 72 hours! Pretty hard to imagine it could be pulled off but I guarantee it would be impossible without stockpiles of medication. ALL OF IT IS STORED FOR PUBLIC USE! The only government personnel who would get preferential treatment are those considered essential to carrying out the mission and maintaining order. That is as it should be! No, I don't know where the National Stockpiles are because they wouldn't even tell those of us who were formulating the plan. Our plans start at the point where the product is delivered to Indpls by air, truck, or both. I'm sure every major population area is making similar plans..........or should be!

OH, BTW. The plan didn't call for any product being delivered to any homes! Ya' gotta' take just a bit of personal responsibility, as alien as the idea may be to some.

I was referring to (unauthorized) transfer to certain rich/political persons (they have to take care of themselves even if someone else loses out) - you know: "lost, damaged, miscounted", etc. :rolleyesedit:
