You're right on all counts and I did experiment with changing my grip. Obviously if you're gripping the crap out of the gun with everything you have, your pinkie shouldn't be able to do anything else. It didn't work as well for me until I tried gripping the crap out of the gun with my support hand and letting my bidness hand relax as much as possible. Without a support hand, it's a little trickier, eh?

I should probably add that I find myself shooting with a pretty solid fist around the grip when I shoot one-handed from retention or other very close range shots where you don't need as much deviation control. If I'm trying to make a head shot at 20 yards, the pinkie comes off. I don't think about it in either case; it just happens.
