Fighting Without a Firearm Training in Central IN

Are there any good trainers in Central IN who teach simple combat without firearms? I don't want to learn an art or discipline. I don't want to buy a gym membership. I don't want to attend two or three sessions a week. I don't want to do push-ups, run, or other activities that I can do on my own. I don't want to sit and meditate after a training session.

I just want to get some quality instruction occasionally on disabling a threat quickly when the circumstances don't allow for the use of a firearm. It may be hand-to-hand, knife, stick, or improvised weapons.

Your advice is much appreciated.

Hand to hand would be the best option as chances of having a weapon, even a improvised one, at hand when the crap goes down is pretty low.

Unfortunately I don't know of any decent seminars or whatnot that you could take and most decent hand to hand techniques should be practiced often under the eye of a good instructor (to catch your mistakes) and usually requires some sort of membership.

I am currently taking Muay Thai at Indianapolis Martial Arts Club and I cannot give them enought credit. Though it is on the pricey side, I enjoy the hell out of it and have learned a LOT. They do throw in a some exercise stuff in it, but it is far from the majority of the classes. They do teach techniques that are for self defense only on top of the more ring related stuff (i.e. gun takeaways and weapon defenses).

Scutter and I study at American Blackbelt Karate Academy. It's a very laid back dojo. If you dont want that though, there's a Krav Maga place on 96th street in front of the Sam's Club off of I-69. I've learned some Krav Maga. It's hand-to-hand combat created in Israel. Our Sensei was teaching it, but not enough people showed interest in it at the time so he started teaching a self-defense class for non-karate people. That's on Thursdays from 7-8 I believe. You can go just for that class and not take actual karate classes.

+1

The Sensei at American Blackbelt Karate Academy is *awesome*. Great, great guy. I'd definitely recommend any of his classes.

Thanks, everyone. I have looked into Krav Maga for a couple of years, but have not found many instructors. There used to be a gym on Southeastern Ave who seemed to have sufficient credentials for teaching it, but they have now switched their focus to Crossfit.

spasmo, what's your instructor's Krav Maga background? Is there a website I can look up?

Thanks again.

I haven't looked at the place on 96th street but here's their website: KRAV MAGA INDIANAPOLIS

My sensei doesn't teach it anymore in a classroom setting. He does do one on one training with people though.

Also keep in mind that even hand to hand there are different levels of fighting. What I mean is, krav maga is a good self defense system, but some of it is pretty effing hardcore meant only for life or death situations. You wouldn't necessarily want to gouge out someone's eyes because they took a swing at you in a bar. They are all tools in the tool belt and it is a good idea to get as many tools as possible to cover the most situations as possible.

Seconded. Most of the Krav Maga techniques I've studied end with a terminal move.

I must be missing something or have just completely lost it. I am pretty sure we were usually given 3 options on each technique which ended with

1. Bringing the guy down (could be knockout or just a joint lock, etc)
2. Maiming the guy (breaking his arm, leg, etc)
3. Death

Maybe I'm thinking of just our regular self-defense classes but I thought those were the options in Krav Maga too.

You're not nuts. Yeah, the options are always there. You can always just stop fighting and let go. The actual technique was always terminal, however.
