![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Let me say this once: there is an addage that goes something like: "Show me the hottest girl on the planet and I will show you the guy that's tired of her [behavior]!" There is nothing worse than the sheep woman who, with a straight face, instructs me that: "When you speak to women, you need to speak slowly and use small words. Because if you tell them 'everything will be gone', you really should explain what that means. You cannot expect girls to understand that!" ![]() It was all I could do not to call some women I know and then watch the re-education (althought that last word is pretty big). Some day, off the board, at an event, ask me again and I will tell you worse examples than this one. They are not fit for a family board. And yes, they pay my bills and feed my kids. I await their return so we can get off the ramen. But as for stories, NateIU10 can probably go far further than I can spinning the yarn... |

![]() | techres, I'm sure you're aware but sometimes sticking a failed drive in the freezer overnight can net some positive results. Its particularly annoying when you're trying to help someone out with a dying/dead drive and they want you to find one document or something in specific but they don't even know where it was kept on the drive. "It was in a folder called bobs stuff." "Is that one the root of c? " "Uh what?" |

Yeah, the freezer trick nets you maybe three minutes runtime. It's *very* helpful if you know where to look on the drive. I've gotten a few strange looks when sitting in the break room with a torn-down computer with wires running into the freezer.

![]() | Dang, another one of my old, hard earned tricks being blithely tarted around the internet... Actually, you guys were just a few minutes faster on the draw. I always liked to do in office service calls on laptops, pull the drives and give them a good stiff whack with a screwdriver to get them spinning again. Hawkhavn |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | If you want to be quicker about it, instead of the freezer, flip a can of compressed air upside down and spray the top of the drive over and over while you are doing the recovery. The spray will freeze the top of the drive just as well as the freezer usually and takes no time. Plus it's fun. Probably kills bunnies on the opposite side of the planet though... |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Windows Backup is a quick way to get the drive backed up. Accessories -> System Tools -> Backup Backup Wizard and Backup Everything on this computer. If you do that periodically, you will get most things you need. I use a scheduled task to backup the system files that are usually locked when you want to copy them, and then backup everything else with with RSync to a Unix box. That took a while to setup.
