![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | It is 1 am, I am sitting at work, waving a hard drive in the air... It is 1 am, I am sitting at work, waving a hard drive in the air... AND WISHING PEOPLE WOULD JUST KEEP BACKUPS OF THEIR DISSERTATIONS! ![]() Every day people cry, literally, on my front counter (which we had to make waterproof), over data that was SO VERY VITAL THEY NEVER BACKED IT UP. Now, sure, the girl whose father dropped $9,000 on data recovery - I get that, they are rich. But the ones who aren't. The ones writing dissertations. The ones trying to become lawyers, or writers, or COMPUTER SCIENCE MAJORS - really need to be keeping those backups. Why should a grad student ever use the expression "only copy of dissertation"? Why would another rip all their music from hundreds of CD's to one computer, copy them to an iPod, throw away the copy from the computer, and then give away all the CD's to the public library? Tears. Daily. No joke. [/rant] Back to work, waving a HD in the air because everytime I stop data stops flowing. This is gonna take forever... ![]() |

Student cries at my counter and goes. I work 2 hours trying to get data (for which I will not be paid if no data is retreived). Then enraged father from Cali calls and chews me for the failure of his daughter to backup. Get off the phone without cussing, then 20 minutes later divorced mom calls from NY to blame dad for making her daughter cry when she was five and then to blame me for being a man who also makes girls cry. Get off the phone to get a drink and check myself. Then boyfriend calls... Drama. We have considered billing extra for having any more than one point of contact on a repair. You pick who it is, but there can be only one. ![]() | |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | I setup BackupPC on one of my Ubuntu servers at home to scrape every PC in the house (far too many). Work great and give piece of mind. It creates the backups as a file system with hard links. Copy the disc and you have a backup of the backup to put in the safe or off site. Makes me sleep well at night. This reminds me of my time at the help desk at school. The grad students couldn't quite get the idea that they can scan pictures at less than 2400x2400 resolution. Two pics and they filled up their quota. The would come to the help desk for my assistance. I would get into their account and say, "Here is you problem, this folder is huge. There deleted that, you should have space now." Without fail, the next question was "What folder?" "Oh, disc-er-ta-shin or something. Probably a system folder." They nearly shat themselves, every time. Before I could say. "No, I just increased your quota temporarily. How about reading the nice sign we put on the scanner about using lowest resolution needed?" Grad students are cute when they are worried. But having everything on network accounts did eliminate the whole user backup issues.
