![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Is the OP concerned about shots for firearms or bow? Also, are we talking head-on, broad side, quartering away, quartering toward? On the level? Down (as in from a tree stand)? The OP mentioned a couple of vital organs. Once one knows where those organs are, the aim point is adjusted based on the animals position. Just saying heart or lungs assumes a lot. Googling "best shot for deer heart or lungs" or "deer shot placement" will give you a lot to read - much of which is worthwhile. Personally I go for the top of the heart which gives me a vital area about the size of a dinner plate (actually larger, although oblong in shape about 9"h and 12" long). The aim point to acheive this varies with the angle with which the animal presents itself. Last edited by cosermann; 07-02-2009 at 14:09. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | cosermann dont read to much into it. With a bow and firearm I do lung shots. I only take the shot if its there and don't force things. With a firearm I have learned that a shoulder blade wont stop a .58 cal or a 12 ga. slug so I aim for kungs regardless. With bow I hold off until there is a shot that I feel comfortable that I can ethically take the animal. And hotfarmboy1...I'm glad we could shed some light. Myfriends have lost deer aiming for the heart and missing.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Heart, always the heart. Aim small, miss small, if you think you have a good shot on the heart and it turns out "a little wrong" you will get one lung at least and probably still get them both. Lung shots just mean nasty meat and all the rest of those rigamarole recipes and shinanagins for special venison marinates that are really nothing but attempts to salvage what started as a bad shot. Take out the pump first, that's the first step to good eats. Who would ever aim at the 5 ring just because they don't think they could hit the bull? |

![]() ![]() | Interesting Jack. You are not a bow hunter, correct? You dont see the lung shot as a good option for firearms? A heart shot a little low or to far forward could be a lost injured deer. Not to mention the loss of meat that comes with the perfect broadside heart shot. What do you think is wrong with the meat from a lung shot animal? I cant tell the difference. |

![]() Head shot, LOL. It's not that it's not a "good shot". It's that it's not the best shot. I never aim for a second best shot on purpose and I can't remember the how long ago was the last time I had to blood trail or go look for a deer that I pulled the trigger on. The adrenalin and hormones released in the panic when they are running are a huge part of giving venison that "gamey" smell and taste you hear people complaining about. Take out the pump, take out the gamey taste. I'd like to know how many people giving all this advice have ever even killed a deer. When I first started here I noticed a guy giving hundreds of posts worth of advice and then suddenly he didn't even know if he needed to adjust his sights or even how to adjust the sights on his own hand gun, ROTFL. ![]() Last edited by Jack Ryan; 07-02-2009 at 21:36. | |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Both lungs for me too And the head shot was just one of those options I didn't really expect people to answer...I do aim small miss small. But, if you happen to miss big ( 3-4") @ 20 yds with bow you can easily miss the deer but, if you're aiming for the lungs you can still clip the bottom and maybe hit the heart by chance. The adrenaline of the deer is over in seconds. 15 seconds is a long time for a lung shot usually you're looking r around 5 seconds on a good solid lung shot.
