In my opinion, any mammal will die faster with a hit to the heart. Also, the anatomy of most animals is such that the heart and lungs are in very close proximity. If you miss the heart you will most likely hit a lung or other vital organ such as the liver. But why not aim for the heart. It is usually center mass anyway.

It's not that it's not a "good shot". It's that it's not the best shot. I never aim for a second best shot on purpose and I can't remember the how long ago was the last time I had to blood trail or go look for a deer that I pulled the trigger on.

The adrenalin and hormones released in the panic when they are running are a huge part of giving venison that "gamey" smell and taste you hear people complaining about. Take out the pump, take out the gamey taste.

I'd like to know how many people giving all this advice have ever even killed a deer. When I first started here I noticed a guy giving hundreds of posts worth of advice and then suddenly he didn't even know if he needed to adjust his sights or even how to adjust the sights on his own hand gun, ROTFL.

I aim for lungs for sure. Bigger target. 2 of them and if a deer can't breathe it can't run or live.

Ive got 23 deer seasons under my belt. Shot my first deer at age 12 with a 30-30 in Pennsylvania. I always have my shotgun boresighted at Gander Mountain the night before the season starts so I know its on target, no stupid questions from me!

Bore sighting is ok to get you on paper. But I still prefer also going to the range with the ammo you use and make sure its accurate with that ammo. Your gun may prefer a different ammo than w hat you use. I always try different types whenever possible. Just for example, the other day I was sighting in my 30/06. It had been boresighted by a friend of mine. Windage was way off, but elevation was pretty close. Got it adjusted to hit where I wanted with my target ammo (S&B 180 gr fmjbt), then switched to my hunting ammo (rem 180 gr psp core lokt). And it had a different P.O.I. The 2 inches above point of aim I had achieved with the S&B so it would be on target at 200 yards, was almost at point of aim with the remington ammo. Same scope settings. So its always a good idea to actually get your gun out there and see what ammo it likes best, and groups best with at the range you will be using it for. Otherwise you may be way off when the time comes to shoot and may lose your deer.

I'm prob gonna get out my muzzleloader, and a couple others in the morn and head to the range to see if I can get them sighted in too.

I'm going with the minority on this one. The heart. I don't have any elaborate reason for it. It's just what my daddy taught me. I understand you lung guys though.
