![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | The Amish near Turkey Run are great people in my book. My grandfather used to have a little farm about 20 minutes from the park, and when he decided to buy a retired trotter and a buggy he hired an Amish craftsman to do all the leatherwork and help set up the buggy. I took one ride with him during the process and while he was teaching me how to drive a cart he told me that many of the children born Amish decide to leave the community for the comforts of modern living. He told me that they tend to want TV, and computers, and phones as teenagers, but after they become adults a large number choose to give these things up and return to the lifestyle and community. So, yes, it is possible for one person who is not presently living an Amish lifestyle to become part of the community.

![]() ![]() | You were in my part of state. I carry mail NE corner Parke County, 35 Amish families on my route (Rt 2 Rockville). I have a lot of respect for them. They are just like us, a few wild ones. Two of our neighbors are Amish, one of which is being shunned at present. I don't socialize with them (don't care for horses) other than on route. There are a lot of people who make their living hauling them around. |

ALOT. a few of the guys i worked with used to own a bunch of Class 3's...... a few AKs and one guy had an old school colt. nice rifles. and you can't ask for better neighbors and friends (most of the time).

Being connected to the power grid would make them "of the world", because it would be a dependence building part of their lives. Many answers to the questions posed here can be found in the Wikipedia article on the Old Order Amish. Very intersting read, if you have some time. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_Order_Amish We are acquainted with several Amish and formerly Amish families; this is where we buy much of our food. I for one think that if everyone lived like the Amish, the world be be a far better place. I routinely hold them up as an example of how one is self-sufficient, and not bother others. Can one BECOME Amish?
