I saved the liver from my deer for the express purpose of feeding it to my dog. I've found pro's and con's online. I'd like some INGO input, if you have experience with feeding raw/cooked game animals to dogs.

![]() ![]() ![]() | As long as you cook it first, you will be good to go-except with salmon/trout. Salmonoids have a parasite in them that even when cooked can still kill a dog. My lab got into some salmon and ended up with a $700 vet bill. I have fed my dog all sorts of things, and other than salmon, they're all fine. Giving them raw game, however, is risking spreading parasites. I'm not a vet but thats my experience.

Those along with the heart, liver would be bagged into small portions and froze. During the winter months quite often I would pull out one of these bags toss it in a pot with water and boil it up. Then I would add some dry food and serve it to the dogs, they loved it. It helped get rid of scraps, and gave my animals a hot meal on a cold day.

She is going on 10 now so I think if there were any ill effects they would have surfaced by now. I never give her anything uncooked that would just be foolish. Just don't overdue it, too much of a good thing can be bad.

He just takes the liver and slices pieces off and hand it to the dogs. I'm talking about 2" square pieces 10 inches long. The dogs swallow it whole, nearly choking. He didn't seem to mind that part. BTW, he is a well seasoned hunter and these were his hunting dogs (likely coon dogs). |

| Plinker | I fed my mastiff some raw (not to much while trimming) and she got the neck bone. No issuses. There are a number of raw meat "diets" for dogs that people do.... Some swear by them but i just wanted her to have a treat she normally wouldn't get. I've also seen guys give their dogs a fresh leg. But the wife wouldn't have that in the house. ![]() Nathan |
