Pami - Didn't she write about crying as she stared at the P-22 sitting on the bed, newly acquired by Lars, as she was afraid of guns?? Look at her now. NOT the same viewpoint in the pink hat and the AR.
It was a S&W 22A.

Here's the story:

PS... *now* we anticipate actually having children in the house. Figures.

Psychologically speaking ,this is true. A lot of it is due to the different hormonal make-up between men and women. I believe it is progesterone that makes women social creatures, whereas testosterone makes men aggressive (and searching for and preparing for potential threats).

People hold pretty tightly to the values they learn, and its not exactly a social norm for girls to be brought up around guns. Even in houses that are gun friendly, the women may be isolated from it. Do not expect them to be ok with it, they were brought up with either no exposure or the lesson that guns are bad.

Do not confuse ignorance with stupidity. Just because a person seems like an "anti" doesn't mean they've ever really thought about it, or heard a convincing argument to the contrary.

I think this thread and my above comments may help explain why it's not necessarily a good idea to discuss this right away. A potential wife or S.O. may be much more receptive to your views once they know you and know you are a rational person (presuming you are rational ). Bust out the gun conversation the first or second date and she may think you are wacko. RKBA is an important topic to me but that doesn't mean we have to talk about it within the first week of dating.

I am not advocating that you stay with someone who sees things 180 degrees off of your perspective, but at least give the person the time to get to know you before you bring out the "make it or break it" conversation.

Their discomfort may easily stem from a lack of exposure. You could be the solution if you are patient and work with them, rather than saying "well dump her if she doesnt like guns!"

I've a friend that has this down to an art.

He cuts lengths of 2x4's to about 30" long and sticks them in a cheap zip up gun case.

He comes upstairs from the shop, plops the case down on the kitchen table - tells her he's thinking of selling or trading the old dog off as it's just taking up space.....

Then comes back home with the same old thing that he realized he just couldn't part with.

She's never declared any interest in seeing what's going out the door - but he always shows off the new one coming in "that he couldn't part with".

I don't know how I've been able to keep a straight face all of these years.

Clearly one should save their 30" scrap 2X4's....

I would go for the gun, wives are too expensive to get rid of, or to get for that matter. The only problem with Scott county, is that your girl may carry a bigger gun than you!!!

Perfect Girlfriend

My previous girlfriend of 6+ years (we broke up because I did not take care of myself as well as she wanted me to) was perfect for me when it came to my owning a few firearms. She told me that if she was going to have to live with John Rambo, she might have as well know how to shoot a few of his guns. She was a pretty good shot with everything up to and including a 1911. She quickly learned firearms safety and could load and unload any gun that she was taught to shoot. Some of her 25 yard targets were actually better than mine. I really wish that I listened to her a little more and was still with her. I was not always the one to get out of bed in the middle of the night to go downstairs to investigate a suspicious noise. Just kidding, I was the one.
