Shot my first gun ever

On Tuesday I finally shot my first gun ever, it was a shotgun, I was trying to hit clay discs but I didn't hit any. I didn't think I would like it at first but I did. I don't have a gun right now but is really thinking about getting one some time soon. My boyfriend didn't think I would shoot it and or like it, BUT I LOVED IT! I cannot wait until next Tuesday to go back to the range and shoot some more.

My family doesn't like guns, one of my sister's told me if I get a gun then I cannot carry it at her house when she has kids, and since she said that my boyfriend won't go over there any more that is what he said. So I don't know what to do, I don't want my family to hate me.

Welcome aboard. It is not uncommon for folks that haven't been around guns before to be scared of them, and to say things like your family has said to you.

Think about how quickly your opion has changed now that you've been out shooting. People that shoot or carry guns are not a bunch of crazy wierdo's that you don't want to have around your kids.

Rather, we are honest, hard working Americans that are here to lend you a hand when you need it, help you when you feel helpless, and befriend you when you need a friend.

The best way to get them past their fear is through education, and by showing them that you and your boyfried are responsible and handle yourselfs safely when you have guns in your possession. This can also go the other way if you act irresponsibley with them, and can further instill the fear that they have.

Wohoo! Glad you enjoyed the shooting. I'm a fairly recent convert to shooting and I love it, too. You have many years of fun ahead (Lordwilling!). Take it slow with your family -- one step at a time. You'd be amazed what people can get used to after a few years.

The family thing will indeed take time. When you finally become a gun-owner yourself, you will force your family to shift their thinking of what a "typical" gun-owner is. This is never easy. But, many here have been in the same boat before. We look forward to your progress!
