As for shotgun loads, I'm in the "bird shot is for little birds" camp. I like Federal Tactical "00" Buckshot, Reduced Recoil. I'll edit if I can find the p/n. Some say #3 or #4 buckshot is OK too.

Birdshot has limited penetration and may not stop a bad guy. Makes ugly wounds, yes, but a crack addict won't feel it.

I am by no means a tactical shotgun expert, and for sure the birdshot will penetrate fewer walls, but think about what your defensive position will be in the home, and where your neighbors are and if at all possible use buckshot.
