![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | My Mom Wants a Gun I took my mom shooting for her first time over the summer and she recently told me she'd like to have her own gun. Yay mom! She did well but will need some more practice. She was doing the classic "lean way back to brace for the recoil" stance. I'll have to spend some more time with her to get her comfortable.I need some purchases suggestions, and maybe even some INGO for-sale offers to help me decide what to buy her. She wants a handgun to keep in the house. Not something to carry, and not a large gun like a shotgun. Budget is roughly $400, give or take. What say you INGO?

Then again a small semi-auto may be the ticket. Depends on whether she's going to have you to strip it and clean it or if she's a do it yourself sort. I'd take her to the Indy 1500 to look at a wide variety. She might find something "cute" that she likes. Or do a search at Bud's and look at what they have to get some ideas. Lots of nice revolvers out there. Last edited by mrjarrell; 09-29-2009 at 14:42. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | 4" .357 Magnum. Load with .38's to start and move up as she gains more confidence. Or a full-size 9mm, 40, or 45 if she has the strength to operate the slide (most healty people do, but it can take practice and proper technique). For $400 you should look a the used market for S&W and Ruger for revolvers. Used Glocks, Springfield XD, S&W M&P can occasionaly be found for that price. but are generally a bit higher. Some people take the lean back stance. This is usually no more than a natural attempt to balance the weight of the gun on outstretched arms, the cause of which can be a combination of physiological things, not necessarily due to being a woman, but can be helped by: Speading the feet to shoulder width, perhaps a bit more. Bending the knees a bit and bending foreward at the waist slightly. Now the natural tendency (before picking up the gun) will be that the person will push their butt out a bit to counterbalance the foreward lean. Weight should be more on the balls of the feet than the heels. Now holding the gun will not upset natural balance so much. I think of it as a more erect version of the ready stance that is common in many sports.

Good for her!!.

![]() | a good gun for her would probably be a .22 being a first time shooter and when she gets used to it get her a bigger caliber.

Unless she has property on which she will practice, she also needs her LTCH and I recommend a training course in the use of her pistol. Any of several instructors on here can provide what she needs in that area. Good luck, to both of you, Blessings, Bill
