Let me preface this by saying that I graduated from Henryville High School, and have been up there several times since to deliver supplies. My family still lives in the area, and my father has been up there for the last week helping to clean up the wreckage.

First off, how deplorable and depraved do you have to be to come and steal from people who just lost EVERYTHING? Seriously? People make me sick....

Secondly, my father was involved in that arrest. Said he saw the guy take off running, and he got ahead of him and crashed down into the woods in front of him. Said the guy saw him coming for him, and turned around and went back to the Sheriff's deputies. Guess a 6'4" 240lb Marine with a claw hammer coming after him was enough to make him re-think his decision to run.

Thankful that the scum bag wasn't carrying a gun, as well...I know dad wasn't carrying at the time. Could've had a whole different ending...I know that the few times I went up there since the tornados, I've been carrying, police checkpoints or not. Too many idiots like this guy.

Just wanted to brag on my dad, is all...carry on. :D

I heard that over the weekend there was a towing company out of Scottsburg towing cars to their lot and charging the owners an impound fee to get them back. ISP put a stop to it. One of the ladies who was in the high school had her van towed by these creeps.

Its absolutely astounding how many people will try to take advantage of those who are already experiencing such a terrible tragedy....where has all the human decency gone? :(

Security in a storm ravaged area is a huge concern. Good for your Dad!

LE (or Nat'l Guard) should deal with neighborhoods or business districts with damage. This would likely stretch a Sheriff's Dept. and/or PD beyond their limits.

The idea of camping out to keep people out of your home's location is not a pleasant thought. Valuables could be anywhere on the property, or blown away.

I spent a week working in Joplin after that storm. The terminal I was working at had been gone thru and we chased people out daily. The LEO were so thin people felt they could get away with anything. The problem is there is really no real punishment for the crime. All though the bad guys act like yhey are in the old west. We cannot get the rope out and give them what they deserve. Best wishes to all in southern Indiana.

Back in '77 or '78 a tornado struck in the Cincinnati area. I was working for the Green Township PD at the time. We got off fairly lucky. The tornado touched down on only one of our suburban streets, but pretty well demolished the homes there.

Our chief posted a couple of us on the street to guard the homes as there was a bordering wooded area that would make it fairly easy to creep up on them undetected.

His orders were simple: if we saw anyone looting we were to kill them.

I walked the area with my Mini-14 slung. Nothing got stolen.

    Those were the days.

but why kill em? our government would rather house, feed, and medicate them at our cost. the .12 cent solution got too rough on some?

Yeah, I think most of the people in Henryville would prefer it that way...I ran into the assistance principal of the school today, actually. I know his preference; ran into him at the gun store, and he was buying more ammo. :D

Police said Smith admitted that he went into the property without anyone’s permission. But according to the police report, he told police that he saw copper lying around and figured someone was trying to steal it, so he collected the copper for the purpose of making sure it wouldn’t get stolen.

Sounds like a solid excuse to me.

I was at Pekin last weekend and headed to Henryville this weekend. It is sad to know that so many people are around to help yet there are those around solely to take advantage of the situation for their own personal gain. In fact, the folks we are helping this weekend have already told us that we would probably need the police to call them when we arrive to authorize us to enter into the area.

Last weekend, we were cutting tons of wood and stacking it nicely for the homeowners to use, sell, dispose of as they pleased. Every once in a while, a truck would back up to one of the piles and drive off with a heavy load of hardwood. I never could figure out of they were wood looters or what. At least they weren't rummaging through the homes though.

near Bedford on a whole lot of land.
This is one of the reasons that it's best for well meaning people to coordinate response efforts and not just load up supplies and head down. The chaos of the situations mean that the more undirected people around the worse the security problem is. I've worked numerous disasters and run off looters more times than I can count. While I wouldn't necessarily want to kill them, I wish it was legal to break their legs.

I would support a law allowing looters to be shot. My wife always rolls her eyes at me. I always make sure I am carrying a full size piece with extra ammo when we go to the basement for a tornado warning. I always tell her it is in case I see some looters.
