I think I would like a .357 revolver (maybe a Taurus model 66) or some sort of 1911 in .45. I'm a grad student, so if I buy a 1911, it will probably either be the Rock Island or Taurus PT 1911.

I've looked at 3-4 handguns about which I've read in gun blogs and their specs and have decided to go with either a Glock 19 or M&P9c. The Ruger SR9c feels really good in my hand but it's heavier than the other two. One thing I did like about the SR was that inspite of the added weight, it's very balanced. The weight seemed to be centralized and although it's about 3oz more, it was hard to feel it. The barrel end didn't feel heavy.

The Glock and M&P are owned by some of my friends so I'm definitely leaning in that direction. Unless you have the larger mag, the handle of the M&P is a little short for my hands (on the big side). I've handled my son's 19 and it feels really good.

    +1 for the SR9c.

I've got one and I don't head to the range without it.

Keep in mind that a pistol without a loaded magazine in it may feel barrel-heavy because there is no weight in the rear of the pistol to "balance". This is especially true of polymer framed pistols.

Found my Next Handgun today at Plainfield Shooters supply today headed back down there tomorrow. Guess it was meant to be since I am going back that way for work tomorrow.
They had the best price and the best altitude of all the shops I went to today.
