A friend of mine is wanting a small light weight 9mm semi auto. I suggested to him the Ruger LC9. Did I steer him in a good direction? I don't know much about them myself, but I think Ruger is a good make.

Pass on the LC9 and get an LC9s.
Or if you don't want a safety and mag disconnect, the LC9s Pro.
The S stands for striker fired and IMHO they are a much better trigger than the initial LC9 model.
My LC9s Pro gets carried often.

^^^^Do what hornet says. I have an LC9s and the LC9sPro both are great guns.

^Hornett nailed it. Skip the LC9 and look for one of it's two direct descendants.
I have the LC9S and I'm very happy with it. The tiny white dot sights are excellent and the trigger is light years better than a double action pull. The gun is very light and as such, recoil is very snappy but it's a blast to shoot. I shoot it better than my SR9C.

I've either owned or shot just about every bug 9mm on the market, and from my experience I would say skip the Shield and go straight for the lc9s. IMHO, the Shield is at the bottom of the list for me when comparing to the lc9s, Sig938, XDS, and the Glock 43. Not only do I think the lc9s shot the best and have the nicest trigger, it's also the least expensive of the bunch....usually. Just my :twocents:

Gonna jump in on this discussion just for the heck of it. I bought the original lc9, and hated the trigger pull, why to long.....sold for the Sig p938 and love that gun for the safety features and the size. I also purchased the lc9s recently and it is great, it is fun to shoot, yes is a little snappy on the recoil but very manageable. Ruger lc9s is a great carry gun in both models, i think you di the right thing recommending it to your friend.

Traded for the LC9s and love this gun. Accurate, small and a pleasure to carry.

I bought the Shield 9 and liked the way it shot. Then I bought the LC9S. It's now my EDC and the Shield is in my night stand. I highly recommend the LC9S. It's compact and a good shooter.

He needs to shoot one. That will be the ultimate answer. My wife chose the LC9s after we went shopping around (plus she shoots all my handguns up to .357 mag.). It is the one that feels best in her hands and she prefers to shoot the LC9s. It is her gun, and she loves it. That's all that matters.

This being said, I only have one knock on it: It seems every range trip I am shooting it and hit the mag release at least once which renders it unfireable due to the mag disconnect feature. This is why I will not carry one, but this is just my experience FWIW.

Lc9 is likely one of the most popular, inexpensive small 9mm. I hear a lot of people mention they have one and love it. I have also heard many suggest go for the LC9s instead. So to answer your question I think you did good mentioning that to your friend. If he doesn't know the difference between the two he will likely enjoy his like many others alepready do

The LC9s Pro models have no manual safety nor a magazine disconnect. :)
