we used to yell at them when they drove by our house and sometimes they would stop and we would often inquire why they worked for PUPD. usually the conversation ended with us laughing at them and telling them they work for PUPD because they are too fat and out of shape to join a real police force. those were the days, i eventually went on to pursue a job in law enforcement and subsiquently became fat.

Actually, the joke was on _you_. PUPD is the highest paid university PD in state. They make around $8,000 more a year than IU cops. They treat their people well, and I have never heard one complaint from an officer. You are right, some veteran officers that tend to grow, and grow, and grow could never pass a PT exam if they wanted to leave, but when you can easily clear $60K/year with OT (some of that watching college basketball and football games), why would you want to leave? Yea, I doubt they get the take home car, but that is only worth around $3,000/year unless your the kind of officer that drives it _everywhere_.

So laugh all you want, those cops are making $60K+/year and trust me, it ain't that hard of a job being a glorified babysitter!! Why bust your hump at a municipal PD when you can have the same, or better pay, working in a better environment, doing less work?

As far as the cursing, just a sign of the times if you ask me. I think there is a difference between swearing someone" ("You MFer!") and using swear words as part of the conversation: ("Get on the MFing ground!"). As far as never using swear words, that is laughable. There are some folks of people that I _have_ to use swear words. No, I am not swearing at them, but I am using them, usually as adverbs/descriptors. Why? This is how _those_ folks were raised, it is their language. They don't understand my college degree professional drivel, it sounds like a foreign language to them. Maybe the guy just got done dealing with a forth generational welfare type who uses F-bombs, S-bombs, etc. every other word (and not just out of meanness, just talks that way) or some kid who just go back from the war. Can you give him a pass for one time, or do you need to sack his personnel file because of this horror that was placed upon you? I would say if it was one word, one time, give the person a pass. It was every other word, joking, not joking, whatever, then yea, I would understand someone filing a complaint.

Why do people wait until the cop shows up before getting out their license and registration? In countless threads here, we hear of folks having to politely inform the POPO that they can't get to their info because their CQB MK-V Tactial Destroyer is in the way. Have that **** ready. Is your glovebox so jacked full of stuff that you'd have to dig for your reg? It should be so simple.. cop walks up, window starts down, cops asks, info is passed. No mention is made of my gun.

+1 Agreed..my info's always been ready BEFORE the cop got to the car... course that was before I was carrying, but same idea.....they usually took a while to get to me after stopping me so I had plenty of time to have it ready.

I guess that was his "sense of humor" if you wanna call it that? But there is no reason to act like that if the citizen tells you upfront and compliant like. I'm 26 and a former Marine and have SEMPER FI stickers on my car but the last time I was pulled over, I gave the trooper my military ID, drivers licence, pink card insurance and registration, he asked if I had a weapon and I said yes sir. He said and I quote "why the eff didn't you tell me up front you had a gun you little sh.., being 24 and just home from my last tour I told him i was not obligated to yell you I was armed. The trooper went ape sh.. He opened my door and basically pulled my out of my car and told my to face the car. I was handcuffed, dissarmed, and put face down on the hood of his car.
So I'm mad as heck now but tryin to keep my cool. He calls for backup. I'm red in the face at this point. Long story short, he let's me go, no warning or ticket for whatever violation I had commuted. I ask for his name, badge # and head officer name and he goes "boy you just don't know when to quit do ya?, get in your car and get outta here"... I reported him at the next gas station I was at and I do believe he got what was commin... How bout them apples

I respect LEO's, I really do....them and anyone else who puts their lives on the line (be nice) for us...but THIS is what gives them a bad public image some times...this was no way to treat anyone

i swear all the time. i dont see any difference between the F word and crap. i dont shelter my child either. id rather her learn words from me rather than at school. by then i can teach her what not to say around others with weak ears.

cursing doesnt mean what it use to mean, its just normal talk now. i hate typing words on here because i have to replace a lot of the words i would use in a normal conversation with PC words. i dont agree with or like sensorship, but in the world there are a lot of people who still dont wanna hear curse words. i say if you dont like it then dont listen or read what i say, but i dont own this forum so its not my choice. so i will follow the rules, and i may have slip ups but i dont do it on purpose.

so my point is that there are certain jobs where using curse words isnt acceptable: polce (unless you just got done with a high speed chase and almost died, then use whatever you want, and kick him in the ribs a couple times, i dont care). Preachers: youd crap your pants if father so and so, dropped the F-BOMB right in the middle of sunday sermon. A retail store: if you work at lowes or walmart, or target, start cursing at customers and see how long you have a job, maybe about 2 days.

so cops need to be professional, and NOT CURSE at citizens, even if they look young. curse all you want in your personal lives but not at Good citizens, even if they make a small mistake. now like i said, the real bad guys, cuss at them all you want, who cares.

it is illegal to voice record someone without consent but video taping is legal, would get thrown out of court...but i agree file a complaint witht he dept.
Not in Indiana it isn't. You are free to tape to your hearts content and never once tell the other person or get their consent to be recorded. I hope your LEO trainers aren't telling you this, because if they are they're going to get you and your department sued one of these days.

For one it’s a preference and for me one that works. I’ve always had professional encounters when getting pulled over.
My registration and insurance card is in my top visor, so I can reach that with no problem. I just do not want to be reaching around to my wallet and the officer walks up and see’s my hand near a gun. Every time I’ve been pulled over I haven’t had the time to hardly shut my car off and roll down my window before he/she was at my window.
Again it’s just a preference that I feel more safe doing.

prehaps you miss my point. its not a money thing, they'd have to pay me big money to to be a babysitter up there too. however, if you want to spend your career writing citations for minor in possession or disorderly conduct, have fun. they have the same dangers as anyone else has but what i always found intersting was this, each "officer" i delt with up there was a D!CK smoker! its one thing to be professional and its another to be a JBT wanna-be. even the campus security(students who worked for PUPD) were jags. so, money aside, these guys are tarnished by "babysitting" students who are away from mommy and daddy for the first time. professionalism should be evident no matter what profession you are in and in no matter what situation you are in. IMO, these officers get used to dealing with kids and become somewhat complacent in their actions and that is wrong. cut him a break, yeah, if i were 19 again i wouldn't have thought about it but now having served my time in public service i would file a complaint. no excuse for ignorance. :@ya:

In the OP's case...I don't see a reason for him to have been cursed at. Generally...you'll get treated how you act. This may not have been the case in this incident.

I'd be interested to know the age of the officer (I may have missed it here). I'm not making assumptions...but it *seems* that younger people find "colorful language" more acceptable. IMO...it has it's place...but not in everyday conversation. :twocents:

Was pulled over for my license plate lights being burnt out. Was told to grab my license and registration. I politely said(since I believe in informing them so they don't have to find it.) "Sir, Just so you are aware, my handgun is right next to my wallet. Would you like me to step out to grab my wallet?"

Purdue Police Officer "No, just don't pull your gun on me, or ill F*****g shoot you!"

My situation was kind of reversed. I got pulled over for (accidentally) running a red light in Muncie. I got out and said "Sorry officer, I did not see it in time."

    He said "No, you're not!"

Then I said "Who the F do you think you are telling me whether I am sorry or not!?" and went on a rant about if I were a new driver, and this was the first time to be pulled over, that's not a great way to try and have a good reputation with the citizens.

Long story short, he gave me a warning. Oh, and there was a Sheriff's deputy in the car with me.

I just don't think it's right for them to cop an attitude. I was sincerely miffed that I messed up. Let alone get pulled over for it. (See my other thread on my stupid stuff - I'm an idiot and will be the first to admit it to any and all for every stupid thing I do....But that's no reason to be a richard)

i had many, many run ins with PUPD during my tenure in west lafayette. more than once i was chased down a back alley by some fat guy yelling..."PUPD,PUPD......stop!) we used to yell at them when they drove by our house and sometimes they would stop and we would often inquire why they worked for PUPD. usually the conversation ended with us laughing at them and telling them they work for PUPD because they are too fat and out of shape to join a real police force. those were the days, i eventually went on to pursue a job in law enforcement and subsiquently became fat.

WOW, I would be proud to tell that story to my children. I'm curious what Dept do you know work for ?

    Where's the bacon?
I'm an "older dude", last time I got pulled over (the only time in the last 10 or 15 years), the conversation started like this:

Officer : "What the f*** was that s***?".
    Me: "Excuse me?"
Officer : "You know w.t.f. I'm talking about, give me your G.D. driver's license".

No ticket, no warning and the scum bag was in civilian clothes so no I had no name with which to file a report.

I had a lady in the car.

My horrible crime? I moved to the right lane to turn and realized too late I needed to turn left instead and switched back to the other lane.

I don't know if this was true at the time your incident happened, but to pull you over in Indiana, an officer must either be in full uniform OR must be driving a marked unit.

(Aside: Our former Chief here went back to traffic in uniform when he was no longer chief. I don't recall the exact circumstances, but I do recall a patient of mine trying to play lawyer once...His answer? "No, but I can get a marked unit here pretty fast... Do I need to do that?"

He did not, in point of fact, need to do that. ;)

    They CAN be taught!

    Blessings,
    Bill

Actually I try not to talk to anyone like that. Generally there are other ways of conveying the message without sounding like a complete idiot.

I'll give you that there are some people that is all they understand.
