Just got a call from my brother. He's at a state park in Indiana (admission charged at a gate up front) with his two sons (5 & 9) and lady, and he ran across a sling pack sitting on a bench. He had a suspicion and looked inside: there was a pistol. (He said it was a Springfield Armory but I didn't press him beyond that.)

Called me and said, "What should I do?" (I'm a lawyer. My brother carries and knows how to handle guns. He didn't want to just leave it there because he was afraid a kid might get into it.) I told him to pull the magazine, rack the slide and lock it open, and put it back in the pack, then take it to the cashier at the gate up front.

They were making their way to the gate when a super-panicked guy ran up to them on the trail: he was VERY relieved to get his pack back.

    Whew!

I hope the owner of the pack tells a lot of people and they all learn vicariously from his bad experience.

Close call. Glad it worked out. Once that pack with handgun made it to the gatehouse, you can almost be sure a radio call would have gone out to the entire district announcing this great discovery.

I found a Glock in a yard. 19 Gen4. When I saw it I first thought it was a toy gun, but realized when I picked it up.

I unloaded it and texted a local officer. He took it and the way they claim is I can not get it back.

What if it's a murder gun? Well you will have the info from when I found it and can get back with me. Nope, that isn't how they do it.

I'm not a Glock guy, but I would have liked to have kept it.

Years back I found a Smith 29 snubby. I had a different contact from a different town and this guy ran the numbers then said that if any hits came back within a couple weeks I would have to turn the gun back in. No worries. Never heard anything else about it.

Guess that's what happens when you do the right thing these days.

From some of the videos of guys magnet fishing off bridges and water inlets finding all sorts of firearms, it all depended on the county they were in wetger they got to get them back or not. Was about a 60/40% getting them back.

Both of my finds were in the same county, just different towns.

Did the finder of the sling open it to "discover" the pistol? Or was the pistol visible without needing to open the sling? If I found an unattended gun while hiking in a state park, I'd turn it in at the office/gate too. Mostly I would be doing this from a lost-and-found standpoint. Heck, I might even turn in the sling even if I couldn't see the gun, again assuming someone might soon realize they're missing their belongings. What I would not do is open a sling to see what is inside. Nor would I handle the gun in any way prior to turning it in.
