Plainfield Shooting Supply carries a lot more reloading equipment and materials since they moved to their new location by the Burlington Coat Factory. Not sure if they carry Vihtavuori though.
Reading and studying manuals is a important to start and continue reloading, but don't forget "writing." Keep records of each reloading session: date, time, caliber, bullet weight, powder, primer, and charge weight. Check your charge weight frequently, like coltfan suggested. While first...
Hands down, most enjoyable survival/disaster flick: Blast From The Past
Christopher Walken as a brilliant scientist builds the ultimate bomb shelter in the early 1960's. Because of the Cuban Missile Crisis, he ushers his pregnant wife (Sissy Spacek) into the shelter where they live for 30 years...
Since I mostly shoot 9mm, I can buy cast bullets for about 5.6 cents/round. It's hard to justify the health risk and cost of the equipment for the limited savings by casting my own.
Plainfield Shooting Supply also carries powder, but I don't know if they have any H322 or Reloaded.
The new Cabela's in Noblesville carries powder. I bought a couple of pounds of Tite Group from them a couple of weeks ago for about $20/lb. They also have S&B primers for about $25/k.
Ranier must have improved a lot over the past 8 years. When I started reloading, I started with Ranier and had issues with plating peeling away if I didn't have the case bell just right.
Never used Xtreme, but have used Berry's with no issues.
Now I mostly use coated cast bullets from Missouri...
Both 9mm and 45acp should be fine, though I did have a serious issue with 38 special several years ago. Apparently when you shoot aluminum cased 38's in a light weight revolver (S&W 642) the recoil can partially extract the bullets from the cartridges far enough to jam the cylinder after 2-3 of...
I have a Dillon 550B and conducted a series of four tests using Tite Group, combining minimum/maximum target weights with full/low powder hopper levels and a minimum of 30 repetitions for each. I used a Lyman 1000XP digital scale for the measurements. Since the Lyman scale only reads to 0.1...
Joe Huffman runs Boomershoot in Idaho and has a blog "The View From North Central Idaho". He's been collecting lefty statements like that for quite a while. Here's the link: The View From North Central Idaho | Ramblings on explosives, guns, politics, and sex by a redneck farm boy who became a...
The best part of reloading is that when the shelves are bare, you can still enjoy your recoil therapy.
For the past couple of years, I've shot very little .22 since it has been so difficult finding it. As long as you have primers, powder and bullets, you can shoot 9mm for about the same price...
Just got home from Cabela's at Hamilton Town Center. I asked a sales associate if they had any Tite-Group (not expecting any) and he said they had 10 lbs in stock. I bought 2 lbs for $20.99 each.
A buddy of mine has a Ruger PC4 (.40 S&W carbine) and a couple of ProMag magazines for it since Ruger only makes 10 rounders. Neither one feeds worth a damn because they don't seat high enough in the magwell. If you press up on them (past the detent) then they will feed, but it takes constant...
I'm surprised that no one mentioned this, but Write Everything Down!
I keep a spiral notebook on my bench to record the following information everytime that I reload:
Date:
Caliber
Bullet Mfr, Type, Weight
Primer Mfr, Type
Powder Mfr Type, Weight
Quantity loaded
You can also record lost or...
Several years ago, Tamara at View From The Porch snarked that since a magazine is defined as an ammunition feeding device, Promag didn't make magazines.
I love my Shield, but don't buy anything without shooting it first. How the gun feels in your hand when dry-firing it is not the same as when it's throwing lead down range.
I bought a Glock 30 several years ago because Glock was all the rage and .45 ACP is God's own caliber. It felt great in my...
There hasn't been much discussion on what holster you should choose, which is critical for a compact concealed carry.
For Keltec P3AT or Ruger LCP, I would suggest a Desantis Nemesis pocket holster.
For a S&W Shield, I like a Crossbreed IWB holster.
There are other options, but stay away from...
I had a Glock 30 that I could not shoot at all. Traded it for an XD9sc and I could put every round into a 9" paper plate at 25 yards. So I bought an XD9 and shot it in IDPA for 3 years. Then found a great deal on a M&P 9 Pro. Oddly enough, it didn't feel as good in my had as the XD, but I could...
