I've got a number of different types of mags for the three AK variants I have, but I don't have any ((10)) and wanted to pick up a few. I see smooth ones and waffled versions. Other than looks is there any structural or functional difference?

    Function over form.

Find ones that work, buy a boxcar full of them.

You should have this many magazines:

All of the Waffle mags have steel liners, but only some of the smooth ones are steel lined. Also, I saw a torture test a few years back, and the waffle mags were stronger.

What he said. There are slab side mags made for civilians. They aren't as robust but you probably won't have any issues with breakage and you certainly won't have issues with feeding. The waffles are IMHO the bet Ak mags period.
