Back in April of this year I attended a FNRA banquet. I entered a raffle for $20 and brought home a new S&W M&P15 in .223/5.56.
I already had several AR15's in the safe, so this one was gifted to my uncle.
This was the first new firearm he has received in more than 40 years, and he was like a kid in a candy store.
The first time I took him to the range was a learning day for him and the platform.
He does pretty good now, but I still can't get him to do ANY rapid fire.
He says he sees that as a waste of ammo & money, and he's right, but no fun there...
I know several AR owners that would have trouble clearing a stove-piped case, or even know how to use a forward assist if the necessity arose.
Some folks own firearms just to own them, and really have no idea about the operation.
