A 100 yard gun? I've been told that a 100 times. I don't think so. Every month at the cowboy match I shoot mine anywhere from 200 to 300 yards, with open sights to boot. This past match the steel buffalo was 230 yards out. You can put a bullet on it pretty easy. With a little practice you could dial it in and take game at fairly long ranges.

i think a 30-30 can be shot at long range, but there is a difrence between can shoot long range and well suited or long range. with enough pratice you could probably make 500 yd hits on a 12 inch plate pretty often. but it would take alot more pratice than modern calibers

Most calibers can be shot "long range" but they should not be used to hunt "long range". The 30-30 with hornady's special rounds are good out to 150yards when deer hunting, at 200yards you are pushing it.

Just because it can get there doesn't mean it'll do what you intend. When looking at a hunting cartridge (and no one can stand up and say the old 30/30 is a legitimate target round ) I'm not looking at raw accuracy or sheer ability to make the distance - I'm looking for energy on game.

First off, the 30/30 is a great old round and I really like shooting it as well as the simple, well built lever guns that famously used it. The problem in discussion may be the terms. The military considers 600 yards to be only medium range rifle. The other term may be acceptable accuracy. A large metal plate at 300 yards may be acceptable accuracy for one use, but under 3" at 300 yards may be the accuracy needed for other uses. The 30/30 is great, but in general established terms, it does not qualify as a "long range" cartridge. In fun loving terms, enjoy every trigger pull!

Just about anything can put a hole in a piece of paper or ding a piece of steel at extreme ranges...

But like the other posters have said, being able to cleanly kill your quarry is what hunters are after.

Getting hits out there is fun. What all the others guys said is true. And I am sure that they all agree, getting hits way out there with a 30-30 is just plain fun.

Like getting hits with a J-Fraame 38 at 200 yards....:)
