Now THAT is how you resurrect an almost 11 year-old thread. My favorite part about it, is that this thread originally fell by the wayside with zero replies! Now it has several, and OP's question still hasn't been answered.

The gun is not available in shops, the company has collapsed, yet again, and not been resurrected, so no chance of finding a shop to coonfinger one of these very very rare pistols. Pretty sure there are less than 20 of these in existence. Production really never got off the ground, and as all handbuilt guns, it started and died and unceremoniously sad death.

But it was submitted to the military, and one of the specialist pistol teams used special MTX guns as competitive pistol guns, very successfully. Didn't earn a contact, the company probably couldn't have logistically fulfilled the production even if it got the contract?

That's what I thought at first, before I noticed melensdad has a million posts and happens to be the world's foremost expert on these firearms.
Maybe the 3rd or 4th most? But certainly not the world's foremost. I was asked to write a book on them, but honestly didn't think I could do the pistol justice. Others have done the work.

They are great, reliable, low recoil compact 1911 pistols. Unlike Colt Officer or Commander pistols (and clones). Detonics (and Sid Woodcock) has dozens of patents, these guns paved the way for Kimber and other brands. They are original handmade works of art. My collection has shrunk a bit, I no longer own one of every model ever produced and sold off a few very rare variants, but still owned (prior to the tragic boating accident) dozens of them in every caliber from 38 Super to 451 Detonics Magnum.

But if you want something that hits what you aim at, every freaking time, and can repeat it after 10,000+ torture tested rounds, these prototypes (with my initials as part of the serial number) might be the right ticket for you.

All aluminum frame, milled from aluminum billet, on a 6 axis (?) HAAS CNC machine, hand fitted, torture tested, and then carried by me for personal protection after it clocked 10,000 rounds of factory ammo.

BEAUTIFUL. As you say, a work of art. Detonics was the first handgun I drooled over. Delivering the Hammond Times to Hanson’s Sport Shop in Highland. Never did get one. Someday maybe.
