You give the current occupant too much credit and the permanent DC swamp too little credit for their part. Not without also electing a lot of help in the house and senate. At least half of all wounds Trump suffered as president were in his back, and so very many wish to blame the victim rather than call out the true culprits. As long as Trump was backing tax cuts or their picks for judges, everything was fine; anything more populist and it was night of the long knives
